Cursive Word Balloon Backdrop

We’ve been playing around like crazy with balloons lately (see here and here) and we came up with this cursive balloon letter project. It turned out so fun and is seriously so easy! You could put someone’s name on a wall or do a giant number, so many options!

You’ll need a projector for this (I always borrow one from a friend) but the process is really simple. Just trace and tape the balloons on. For this we used the really skinny 160 size balloons in one color.

Materials Needed: Projector, pencil, 160Q latex twisty balloons (in coral), balloon hand pump, scissors, gaffer’s tape

Step 1: Search online for a cursive typeface that you like (some fonts even include cute swashes and flourishes). Download the font and, using a word processor, type your word as large as possible. Create a PDF. Then, project the word onto a large, blank wall and trace lightly with pencil.

Step 2: Inflate a bunch of balloons. You can do this step in advance by keeping the inflated balloons in a big black plastic garbage bag and storing in a cool, dark place the day before.

Step 3: Tape the balloons to the wall with loops of gaffer’s tape, filling the traced outline. To keep them secure, be sure to place a loop at the beginning, middle, and end of each balloon. You may want to use more tape in sections with tighter curves. Blow up extra balloons as you go to fit in the odd spaces. You can do this by inflating a balloon to the length that you need, knotting the balloon on both ends, and trimming off the leftovers.

Killer idea; love the font and color choices. Silly question: how long would you say the art will last (i.e. How long will the balloons stay perky looking?) Thanks!
