I had a friend in elementary school who had a collection of pom pom animals – a frog, mouse, caterpillar, monkey, a whole zoo’s worth. These pom pom bunnies would have had a lot of company! Here they decorate an Easter cake topper, ready to celebrate with family and friends. If you can’t find large light brown pom poms, white pom poms would look equally as sweet.
Materials needed: two light brown 1 ½” pom poms, four black straight pins, white felt, pink felt, two pink ¼” pom poms, gold and teal mini baking cups, two bamboo skewers, two decorative paper straws, gold alphabet stickers, pink card stock, scissors, wire cutters, craft glue, hot glue gun.
Step 1: Insert two black straight pins for eyes into a large pom pom. With a wire cutter, snip the back pointy end off the straight pins on the backside of the pom pom. Repeat for the second bunny.
Step 2: Apply a tiny dab of craft glue behind the pink eyes to secure them. Press the eyes in so they are set back into the pom pom a little bit.
Step 3: Glue a 1/4 inch pink pom-pom on for a nose.
Step 4: Cut out four 1 ½” x 1/4” ears out of white felt.
Step 5: Cut out four smaller matching shapes out of pink felt and glue them onto the white ears.
Step 6: Glue the completed ears onto the top of the large pom-poms. Insert the ears into the fluff of the pom pom to secure it. Hold til the glue sets.
Step 7: Flatten two gold mini baking cup and two turquoise mini baking cups.
Step 8: Trim approximately ¼” around the outer edges of the turquoise baking cups.
Step 9: Using hot glue, glue the bunny onto the turquoise baking cups, then glue the turquoise cup onto the gold cup.
Step 10: Cut out an 11” x 2 ½” pink rectagle, and notch each end.
Step 11: Glue the pom-pom bunnies onto each side of the rectangle. Let dry and place gold alphabet stickers in the center of the pink rectangle, spelling out Happy Easter! You could also paint, stamp or write your message.
Step 12: Glue two decorative paper straws to the backside of the pink rectangle, behind the bunnies. To set up on the cake, insert two bamboo skewers the same distance as the straws, then slip the straws over the skewers.
