When Paul and I go to an art museum we have a standing policy of renting the audio tours. Unless you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the pieces the only thing you get out of the art is what you see in the actual piece and what is written on the little sign with the title. Even Paul who is mostly looking at brushstroke technique and if it was painted wet or dry…doesn’t enjoy a museum as much without the background information. Its nice to consider where the artist was in his/her life and what might have been their mindset. It makes the art have so much more meaning to me.

I could have used this at the Matthew Barney exhibit last week. I kept looking at his stuff thinking, “i wish someone would give me the sound bite on what the heck i am looking at”
