Remember these? Until today, I’ve been glad that cassettes have all but disappeared – I lost many a tape to the wrath of my Walkman. This cassette tape costume is so cute though, I might consider bringing them back! It’s one of our easiest this year, you only need a few supplies and an hour or two. It’s probably a better costume for adults (who can actually remember cassettes) but kids are way cuter models!

We didn’t customize the label, but how perfect would it be to write in the songs from your favorite mixed tape? What would be on yours? 😉

Materials: cardboard, off-white spray paint, box cutter, clear plastic, colored paper (pink and blue), washi tape (black and yellow), hot glue gun, scissors, canvas straps

Step 1. For the base you’ll need to cut out two rectangular pieces of cardboard (with rounded edges), as well as a trapezoid shape and spray paint each of them. Once the trapezoid is dry, cut out a couple of small squares for more detail.
Step 2. To create the label of the cassette, cut out a rectangular shape with straight edges on the bottom and rounded edges on the top. You’ll also need to cut out a oval shape in the middle.
Step 3. On the back of the cassette label, glue a piece of clear plastic over the oval cutout to act as a window. Cut out two gear shapes and one rectangle then glue them to the cardboard base so that they will show through the plastic window you just created.
Step 4. Add more detail using washi tape. We chose to put yellow and white stripes on each side, as well as two black lines for the title of our mix tape.
Step 5. Glue the trapezoid from step one to the piece of painted cardboard, along with the cassette label.
Step 6. Finish the costume by adding canvas straps to connect both pieces of cardboard.

Under the costume, we recommend wearing solid pants/shirt in a coordinating color. For kids, Primary has great basics in a rainbow of colors!
