Sarah probably pitched the idea for a Boombox Pinata because she wanted an excuse to dance (as if she needed one)! BUT I was super excited to make the perfect blend of a pink SHARP QT-50 and the J1 Super Jumbo. From Say Anything to Do the Right Thing, the boombox was such a staple of 80’s pop culture. This piñata would be such a rad addition to a summer 80’s themed party, or to finally fulfill your teenage dream of having the biggest deck on the block. Read on to see how we made it!
Materials: Cardboard, colored cardstock, silver mirrorboard, packing tape, hot glue gun, pink tissue paper, silver mylar folds, scissor, x-acto knife, ruler, white gesso, twine
Step 1: Measure a rectangle the size you want your boombox onto cardboard and cut it out with the x-acto knife (our pinata was 16-½ x 27”). Trace the rectangle onto another cardboard and cut out the mirror image.
Step 2: Cut out strips of cardboard 4-½” wide for each side of the rectangle. Attach the pieces with packing tape on the edges until you have a three-dimensional box. Before you attach all the sides make a small hole in the top center of the pinata. Take a small piece of cardboard and roll it and tie a piece of twine around it. Stick the twine through the hole. Here is where you hang the pinata! Attach the sides leaving a small trapdoor for treats.
Step 3: Cut out a handle from cardboard and trace to make a mirror images. Cut strips of cardboard to connect the sides to make a three dimensional handle. Attach it to the box with the hot glue gun.
Step 4: Paint the boombox white. Let dry.
Step 5: Cut out fringe from tissue and silver mylar about 2” tall and 1 cm wide. Attach the fringe with the hot glue gun, working your way from the bottom to the top. Switch to the silver foil fringe for the handle.
Step 6: Now it’s time for the details! We used cardstock for all ours. Cut big circles for speakers, about 7-¾” wide. Add silver mirrorboard trim to match the handle. Sketch out additional details on the cardstock and cut them out with a pair of scissors.
Step 7: When all the cardstock detail are cut out, attach them with the hot glue gun. Fill the pinata with treats through the trapdoor, glue shut, and you are done!
