How To Become A Better Crafter

At Oh Happy Day, we love learning new crafting techniques, so we’re super excited to partner with Skillshare, an online community where you have access to hundreds of video classes covering a wide range of creative skills! I’ve always wanted to learn hand-lettering, so I took a watercolor brush lettering class.  I watched the video class on my phone, pausing and rewinding to re-watch as needed. Another one of our team members, Erica, took an embroidery class and loved it! I’d like to point out that neither of us are crafters, but we found the classes so simple, straightforward and lots of fun! Skillshare is usually $15 a month, but right now they’re giving Oh Happy Day readers two free months of unlimited access to stream their 16,000 classes. The hand lettering class was so quick and informative! Instructor Peggy Dean went over materials, basic lettering rules, interesting techniques, and ways to add texture to your project. The videos were short and sweet, but covered a lot of ground. I loved how she gave general direction that could be applied to any project, so there’s lots of room to play and experiment!

Erica also had great luck with her embroidery class! She had never done embroidery before, so this class was a perfect way to dip her toes in. She learned about different types of needles, thread, and the difference between cross-stitch and embroidery (I didn’t even know there was one!). She loved the videos and the fact that she could pause or come back to specific sections if she needed more practice. Erica said the class was perfect to work on in down time before bed and easy to pick up where you left off. You can still relax while learning a new set of skills!

One of the best things about Skillshare is that there are so many classes to choose from! Our team were all very interested in the many photography classes, as this is a huge part of our daily work. Some of our other favorites include ceramics and flower arranging. The classes are pretty brief, so it’s easy to pick up a wide range of skills!

I think that good crafting is really about patience! Which I don’t have a ton of, and is why my crafts don’t turn out a lot of the time!

I call myself a “jack of all crafts, master of none”. I can do any craft I put my mind to, and sometimes, I even finish those crafts before moving on to a different project! 🙂

I’m definitely going to try a few Skillshare courses… they’ve been on my radar for a while. I love the idea of their Asian dumpling class, and some of their food photography courses look awesome 🙂
