One of the reasons I moved to San Francisco was because of Dave Eggers. He wrote A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. To this day it is my favorite book. After I finished that book I read his other books, I read his articles in Spin. I read the collection of “nonrequired reading” he edited. I subscribed to McSweeney’s and The Believer. I went to a play based on his second book, here in the city. The first thing I did when I got to San Francisco was to go visit his pirate supply shop/children’s writing center 826 Valencia. I managed to get an internship there but when they found out I was only available after 5pm they nixed it. I love Dave Eggers.
Anyway, the whole point of this post, besides proclaiming my love to Dave Eggers, is to introduce this rant by him which is a combination of a graduation speech and an interview he gave to the Harvard Advocate. It is brilliant. READ IT HERE.
