Breakfast foods are undoubtedly the best — so why relegate them to just one meal? For your enjoyment: our fried egg piñata — sunny side up! This piñata would be perfect for a brunch, or breakfast for dinner party! Read on to see how we made it!
For a Breakfast for Dinner Party, serve this one up with chicken and waffles for mains, and these fried eggs and bacon cookies for dessert!
Materials Needed: Large pieces of cardboard, pencil, x-acto knife, packing tape, 11” balloon, balloon hand pump, ruler, newspaper, flour, water, large bowl, scissors, white spray paint, tissue paper (in white and buttercup), hot glue gun
Step 1: Draw a large fried egg shape onto a piece of cardboard and cut out with an x-acto knife. Trace the design onto another piece of cardboard for a mirror image and cut out.
Step 2: Cut long, 3” wide strips of cardboard to attach between the two sides. Tape the strip along the outer edge of one cut-out. Crease the cardboard so it bends easily around the curves of the shape. Then, tape the mirror image on the other side. Be sure to leave a trap door so you can fill the pinata with goodies!
Step 3: Make a small “X” with an x-acto knife at two points on the top of the pinata. Cut a piece of cardboard about 2” by 3” and cut a small “X” on that, too. Cut a piece of fishing wire about 30” long, then thread and knot the end through the cardboard square inside of the pinata. Thread the fishing wire out of the “x” at the top of the pinata. Repeat for the other side.
Step 4: To make the egg yolk, first inflate an 11” balloon. Tape down the knotted part of the balloon with artists tape, then paper mache the balloon. We used a 1:1 mixture of flour and water. Paper mache at least four layers, allowing 24 hours to dry between each layer.
Step 5: Once the final layer of paper mache is completely dry, carefully pop and remove the balloon. Draw a line around the circumference of the widest point of the paper mache shell. Cut along the line with scissors. Tip: Make the first cut through the hole where the balloon knot was.
Step 6: Trace the paper mache yolk onto the cardboard egg base and cut out the circle with an x-acto knife. Insert the yolk into the opening. Trim the circle to make it wider if needed. Carefully push the yolk in so it’s inset and hot glue to secure.
Step 7: Spray paint the egg white and let dry completely.
Step 8: Cut a bunch of fringe out of white and buttercup tissue paper with a ruler and x-acto knife. Our fringe was roughly 2″ tall and 1 cm wide.
Step 9: Hot glue fringe to the egg, starting from the bottom on both sides and working your way up. Trim any excess fringe to maintain the egg shape.
Step 10: Fill the pinata and treats, then hang. You’re done!
