Be Merry this season with this crepe paper pine needle cake topper! Bonus – it has a second life as a wreath, once the cake is devoured. Just remove the bamboo skewers, and it’s light enough that you can just tape it up on the wall, a door, mirror or prop it on your mantel. Stash it away at the end of the season, and pull it out again next year. Happy Holidays!
Materials needed: different shades of green crepe paper streamers, brightly colored card stock, gold twine, red and pink mini pom poms, floral wire, scissors, glue, bamboo skewers, floral tape.
Step 1: Take a 4 1/2 foot length of floral wire and twist it into an 8″ circle, overlapping once. Twist the end to secure the circle. Set aside.
Step 2: Cut off a 3″ or 4″ length of floral wire.
Step 3: Cut off a 12″ length of crepe paper streamer. Fold in half, fold in half again, and fold in half one more time.
Step 4: Cut fringe into the crepe paper.
Step 5: Unroll and lay flat. Apply glue along the un-fringed side of the paper.
Step 6: Begin at the top of the 3″ or 4″ floral wire, and gently wrap the crepe paper around the wire.
Step 7: Twirl the fringed paper around the wire, moving down as you do. Stop when you are about 1″ from the bottom.
Step 8: Repeat steps 2 – 7 with different shades of the green crepe paper.
Step 9: Using floral tape, attach the pine needles to the lower half of the wire frame circle – I added three on the left side, and four on the right side.
Step 10: Attach mini pom poms with craft glue in various places.
Step 11: From the card stock, cut out 2″ x 1″ letters – I spelled BE MERRY, but you can customize your message.
Step 12: Attach a tiny bit of craft glue to the top of each letter and glue to about 10″ of gold twine. Let dry.
Step 13: Tie each side of the letter garland to the wire frame wreath. Add a tiny dab of glue to secure the knot.
Step 14: Using floral tape, attach the bamboo skewers to each side of the circle.
Step 15: Adjust and fluff the crepe paper pine needles as needed.
