I saw this short clip (seriously its only a minute long–watch it) on Oprah about the Dervaes family in Los Angeles and I’m sort of obsessed with them. They live on 1/10th of an acre and produce 3 tons of food every year.

I have been following them for a couple months now and feel the same obsession. I read their journal everyday at pathtofreedom.com

What an amazing story. We have a small yard, but are able to produce quite a lot of food in very small garden using the square foot gardening method. We also grow herbs in pots. However, our operations are very humble compared to this family.

Oh I saw this too & my first reaction was to announce to my family "I want my yard to look like that!"
One of my brother-in-laws just got chickens & another one just got beehives- I'm so jealous.
I do love that this is getting to be a lot more popular

Obsession is too mild of a word. This is all I can think about now. It’s like someone took my dream and made it a reality. Now I just need to make it my reality. Thanks for the inspiration.

If that is pressure treated wood framing their planting beds, then it is treated with all sorts of chemicals that could leach into the soil and be taken up into the food. Edible food should never be grown in planting beds bordered with preservative-treated wood.

I just watched that clip from the Oprah show. This is totally AWESOME. Do they garden/produce food for a living…or do they have “regular jobs” and keep up with all of that too? I’m inspired!
