Modern Spiderman Party

When it comes to kids parties I want something that looks cute and modern, is easy to put together and that my kids will love. Now that my kids are getting old enough to choose the kind of birthday party they want it usually involves some character or trademarked cartoon. My favorite thing to do is to buy a few carefully chosen store bought pieces and then add a few easy handmade details to make it special. For this Spiderman party, I picked up all the basic supplies (plates, cups, straws, Spiderman costume, balloons) from Target. They have a tons of different themed party stuff!  Then I made a photobooth backdrop by painting a cityscape on white butcher paper. We taped it to the ground and had the kids lie upside down so it looked like they were swinging through the city. I also transformed some red and blue silly string into “spidey spray” with simple hand-painted paper labels. As a fun drink surprise, I froze mini plastic spiders into ice cubes.  Then we built a giant web in our hallway using black yarn. All the kids had to crawl through the web to get into the kitchen for snacks! The whole thing took less then two hours to put together.

Project 1: Photobooth Backdrop| Materials Needed: Large White Butcher Paper, Pencil, Black Acrylic Paint, Paint Brush. Step 1: Unroll paper (you want it much longer than the child.) Step 2: Draw the shapes in pencil and then use a paintbrush to loosely block in the buildings.  The best part is it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Project 2: Spider Icecubes| This is about the easiest thing you can do and the kids love it! Drop in some plastic spiders into an icecube tray, fill with water and freeze!

Project 3: Spidey Spray| Every Spiderman needs to be able to attack the bad guys with Spiderwebs. For this we hand painted “spidey spray” on paper and then taped it onto red and blue cans of Silly String.

Project 4: Spider Web | Materials Needed: Black Yarn, Tape. Step One: Tape six pieces of yarn to the walls and ceiling. Going up and down, side to side, and the last two going at opposite 45 degree angles. All six pieces should cross in the center. Step 2: To make the rings, start near the center. Using a new piece of yarn, tie a knot around one of the anchor pieces, then loop it around the other strings in the circle. When you get back to the first string, tie another knot to close off the web.  Cut off any excess yarn. Repeat with bigger circles moving toward the edge of the web.

This party looks achievable AND awesome! Thanks for the great ideas (and for reminding us that by focusing on a few key things, you can do a great party without spending hours on tiny details that kids don’t notice anyway).

Looks really fun and simple, and not too expensive! Hooray!

Did all the guests share the same costume?

This party idea is absolutely brilliant!! I love it! My 5 year old still hasn’t realized he can choose his own party theme, but I know the cartoon/ superhero thing is going to happen eventually. It’s good to be prepared! I love how you blended handmade props and activities with some themed store-bought stuff. Such great ideas! Thank you!

What an awesome post! You sure made the theme your own (and his own!)

(And I need to note that I had no idea this was a sponsored post until I got to the end. I like that. I felt really organic. Cause Target is awesome and of course you would be shopping there!)

Thanks for this – my almost 4 year old boy is obsessed with superheroes and I’ve been looking for a way to throw a superhero party that he would love while staying as far away from the plasticky manufactured stuff as much as possible! Also, agree with Sue in that I had no idea it was a sponsored post til the bottom and I love that about your blog. Thanks!
