It’s that time of year again — back to school! We had cookie artist Rebecca Jones of XOBakes create these adorable ruler shaped treats for their first day of school. You can even make them to scale for a sweet, educational treat!
Materials needed: Your favorite royal icing and rolled sugar cookie recipes and supplies, Americolor gel paste food colors (Red Red, Bubblegum Pink, Sky Blue, Mint Green, Lemon Yellow), scissors, disposable decorating bags, rubber bands, ruler cookie cutter, toothpicks, piping tip (1.5 or 2 size), ruler
Step 1: Bake and cool cookies, prep royal icing.
Step 2: Mix your icing colors. All colors will be consistency of honey or shampoo to fill in the cookies except for the white color which will need to be stiffer like consistency of sour cream.
Step 3: Load various icing colors into the disposable decorating bags and seal shut using a rubber band. For one bag, cut half an inch off the bottom, load a piping tip of 1.5 into the tip of the bag and fill the bag with white stiff icing. The stiff icing will be used to pipe on the ruler inches.
Step 4: Cut a small bit of the tip off of each of the icing color bags prior to icing your cookies.
Step 5: Ice your cookies and use toothpicks to spread the icing around the cookie and pop any icing bubbles. Let cookies dry for about 30 min to an hour. A fan helps speed up this process.
Step 6: Use a ruler as a guide for piping on your inches onto the cookie using the white icing with the #1.5 or #2 piping tip. Number your inches using the white icing. Let dry for 8-12 hours.

These are so unbelievably cute! I haven’t been to school in a few years now, but I still absolutely love back-to-school/office supplies. These little cuties don’t have TOO much detail either, so I might actually be able to make them! ?
