Happy Mail: Vacation

Summer = vacation season (and I can’t believe it’s almost over!!!). This month, Elizabeth Graeber and I exchanged mail that makes the feeling of sunshiney adventures last. See Elizabeth’s quirky watercolor drawings of famous redheads in her upcoming book A Field Guide to Redheads.

Here’s my envelope to her. I’m taking my first trip to the Southwest next week to Las Vegas, Zion, the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Phoenix, and I can’t wait!

I’m very curious to see what the desert’s like.

And here’s Elizabeth’s envelope to me:

Elizabeth writes: “For the vacation theme I decided to illustrate a colorful, tropical bird with palm trees and a pink moon!”

I love Happy Mail! What a gift to receive a piece of art along with a message from a friend.

I love that! And I am so eager to hear what you think of our beautiful desert. It’s still pretty hot here, so be prepared!

Your post have really inspired me to send my friends creative postage. I’m a lover of snail mail and find any excuse to send cards to my friends and family. It brightens their day and it really helps me express my creativity. Also I just love making everything look pretty and handmade.

Hi! I love these posts so much! I was wondering what website you use to print the envelopes you design. I am assuming that you don’t just paint and illustrate on a blank envelope, but if you do I’d like to know that too!

Hi! I do just paint on blank envelopes! I use gouache because it’s nice and opaque + matte.

So fun! Would love to receive something that pretty in the mail. Also- enjoy your trip!! We just got back from a similar road trip. Fun stops to add to your trip if you have time: Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend (sunset!) in Page, Arizona — the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. We also rented a hogan we found on AirBnB so we could stay on Navajo land near Monument Valley. I definitely recommend it!

Yes! We’re planning to make a day of the drive from Zion to Grand Canyon and stop at Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. I can’t wait!
