For the past two years my family and I have been living overseas in Busan, South Korea. Since my children attend an international school they have friends from all over the world. One of the fun things about having an international group of friends is learning about the various holidays and traditions they observe. Most people are aware of the popular American holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but what about Kite Flying Day? Kite Flying Day is February 8! I just learned about it this year and I think it is a fun excuse to gather friends, go outside, and fly a kite! Here is a fun invitation you can make for your Kite Flying Day festivities.
Materials: colored cardstock, white cardstock, printer or pen, x-acto knife, ruler, cutting mat, polka dot origami paper, washi tape in various colors, scissors, wooden skewers, felt in various colors, glue stick
Step 1: Cut a 4.25” x 10” piece of colored cardstock.
Step 2: Print or write out invitation details on a piece of white cardstock. Use X-acto knife and cut the invitation in 2.25” x 10.5” long strips.
Step 3: Cut a kite shape out of patterned origami paper. Fold vertically and horizontally from opposite corners.
Step 4: Cut a 6.25” piece of washi tape. Wrap around wooden skewer.
Step 5: Secure the wooden skewer to the back of the kite using a piece of washi tape.
Step 6: Cut a bow shape from the felt. Glue the bow where the skewer and end of the kite meet.
Step 7: Use X-acto knife and make two small slits on the colored cardstock.
Step 8: Insert the kite skewer through the slits.
Step 9: Wrap the paper with invitation details around the colored cardstock. Secure with a piece of washi tape or glue.

This is too adorable and so appropriate with the popular up and coming “Saving Mr. Banks” film. As soon as things warm up, I’m declaring my own “Fly a Kite” day if only to craft these. 🙂
