Here are some quick costumes that could be pulled together last minute with an errand or two and from stuff you already have. We put together three classic artist costumes: Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, and Vincent Van Gogh for less than $15 each. These are usually the kind of costumes I end up doing when I’m super busy. I like them simple and classic. Click through here for more photos and all the details.
Andy Warhol // For Andy Warhol we dressed him all in black and added that crazy white wig. You can add some black Wayfarer sunglasses if you wanted too.
Materials Needed: Andy Warhol Wig, Black Turtleneck, Black Pants, Tomato Soup Cans.
Frida Kahlo // We based this costume off one of the beautiful Frida Kahlo’s self portraits. The key to a good Frida costume is the flowers in the hair and the unibrow and moustache.
Materials Needed: Clip on Flowers, Eyeliner Pencil, Earrings, Scarf, and Dress.
Vincent Van Gogh // For Van Gogh we kept it really simple. We bought a red wig and beard and then trimmed it to look like Van Gogh then wrapped some gauze over his poor ear. You could also frame a small picture of Starry Night and carry it around.
Materials Needed: Red Wig and Beard, Gauze, Blue Jacket.

These are too cute! I was hoping to dress my 2 yr old daughter up as a little french artist with the striped shirt, scarf, moustache and all! OF course she wants to be a purple panda bear. I think most young kids wouldn’t understand who Frida Kahlo is much less want to be her for Halloween, but I think it’s pretty adorable!

I think these are inapporpriate and absurd. Childhood is already too short, let’s shorten it some more. These costumes are not for children, they’re for adults.

My daughter dressed up as Frida Kahlo when she was 3. Her idea. We have a beautifully illustrated children’s book about Frida’s life, and one day I caught her up looking at it when she was supposed to be napping. She tucked it under her pillow and asked if she could be Frida for Halloween. So of course I had to grant her that wish!

I’m dying over these costumes. You are very clever! May I ask, where did you get the Andy Warhol wig and for how much? 😀

The special edition Target Warhol tomato soup cans would be great with the Andy Warhol costume! I bought the 4 the other day and they are awesome.

I babysat a 4 year-old who showed me the grave of her pet water snails. One died after the other because, “he was so lonely he just HAD to die.” I think kids understand a lot more than we give them credit for and I don’t see Van Gogh’s missing ear as being too gory. Of course, to each their own.

I never thought I would think a mustache on a woman was adorable, but that one DEFINITELY is. Love it.

When our daughter was four we dressed her up as Frida. We sewed her stuffed monkey on her shoulder too! It was awesome. I might have to try the Warhol one if our kiddo will let us (now that she’s almost 8, it’s harder to dress her what we want.

@shannon – there are enough serious things in the world. You could tell the child he was a lumberjack and he wouldn’t know the difference. Chilllll out let’s not try to make Halloween politically correct! That’s where the magic gets lost!

Okay I love to dress up kids and do it all the time in my own photography but with kids a bit older. I just imagine the poor little girl who wants to be a princess and gets a unibrow instead. And how do you explain wearing a patch to cover a decapitated ear to a four year old? Just saying….

Great costumes! Art historians believe that Van gogh really didn’t cut off his own ear. It is now believed that it may have been cut off in a fight by Gaughin! Not that that’s better, but a bit easier to explain. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/may/04/vincent-van-gogh-ear

To all those worried about Van gogh’s ear, or lack thereof, there is nothing saying these costumes ideas can’t work with adults or teens!! You don’t have to be 4 to dress up!! They are wonderful ideas!!

What an amazing idea. I never wanted to be a mum who dresses her kids because of the parent fun, but these are simply stunning. From these costumes, I would make every single of them. But I have to say, I like Frida Kahlo´s outfit most. I love her art (there is gonna be her Toronto exhibition soon, so I can´t wait), so I can´t really say no to a pint-size Frida. Maybe I´ll take small Frida with me too.

As an art nerd with too many degrees to prove it, these are great. BUT please let your kids be mummies and ghosts and ponies and flowers and trucks and whatever else they want to be! My mom dressed me up as political commentaries every halloween (my brother and I were once the Reagans. And once I was an unemployed immigrant. I’m serious) and while the adults thought these were AMAZING (and in retrospect they were), all I ever wanted was to wrap myself in toilet paper from head to toe and call myself a mummy. Let your kids choose and make their own costumes. It’s SO much funner that way.
