Living Room

This post is sponsored by Art.com

When people come in our apartment they usually comment how it looks bigger than 450 square feet. We hadn’t measured it since before we moved in so I decided to measure it again and we’ve been officially upgraded from 450 to 550 square feet! I measured the countertops too. Does that count as square footage? I don’t know. Somehow 550 sounds a whole lot better than 450 so I’m going with it. Even though this apartment is small it has a really good layout. Some apartments can feel so wasteful with space. For example we used to live in an apartment with an enormous bathroom (it was big enough to fit a queen size bed!) It was a luxury to have a bathroom that big but it was such a waste of space when we needed room so badly in other places like the nursery.

Here is a little peek of our new living room. I knew I wanted some art that was large and black and white and I fell in love with this “Beach Exercises” piece from Art.com that Jocelyn picked. It is quirky but I liked that it feels sort of subtle because it is black and white. The bookshelf is from World Market. The lamp is from IKEA and I am toying with painting it a color (maybe fluorescent?) The little white piece of artwork is by a friend Sunny Belliston Taylor and the large piece on the right is from the flea market.

Our rugs and the last few pieces of furniture that we shipped over from France get here this week. I’m excited to put them in the apartment so I can feel like it is officially “done.” I can’t wait to share pictures of the whole apartment.

Kudos to you for making such amazing use of such a cozy space! Once you’re all done I would love to see a view of each room to see how you managed to organize a space with four of you living in it

Love it! You reaffirm my confidence in working with small spaces! =) We have the 2-shelf version of that World Market shelf in our kitchen and love it!

Do you like the World Market shelf? I love the look of it, but the floor models at the store seemed a bit rickety.

I love how it looks like the men in the photograph are trying to reach for/hold up the lamp arm!

If I may ask, was it super expensive to ship furniture etc. from France? I’m leaving for Paris on Friday and while I’m not PLANNING to shop for anything large, you never know. Thank you for your very helpful tips and suggestions, your blog has been indispensable! 🙂

It was very expensive when we looked into it. Some friends were moving and offered to bring our stuff with them.

Love this glimpse…can’t wait to see more. Our family of four live in Brooklyn in a small (though not quite as small) apartment and I love seeing other tight spaces done beautifully! Love that world market shelf and have been eyeing it myself.

Beautiful, Jordan! I’ve gone back and forth about buying that Ikea lamp for a chest by our front door, but because of this post, I think I’ll go ahead with it. Looking forward to seeing more of your space!

I tried putting books along my sons’ dresser and they keep falling over – which makes me worried to buy a bookshelf with open ends… what are you using to hold your books up? I’ve even tried alternating upright books with stacks of books so there’s not so many, and now my kids don’t like to take the books out because it seems like too much work.

That lamp should be bright orange or gold :)…Or royal blue maybe to match the print?!

I’m totally loving this — I personally like smaller spaces, they always feel so warm and inviting. my old spot was only 450 sq ft and it was surprisingly perfect for entertaining. everyone was forced to get up close and personal, and I loved seeing friends from different groups interacting. (added bonus: the crowdedness made it seem like I was very popular, even though there were no more than 35-40 people at once.)

I also love the personal touches you’ve added from your travels. can’t wait for the tour!

I love living in a small space. It’s fun to think up new ways to reorganize and rearrange things in my apartment. Now if I could only have a backyard I’d be a happy lady.

Hey Jordan, we’re moving to Israel soon, as in for good! I’m trying to figure out how to deal with the small appliances and lamps now that the outlet is different over there. Did you buy lamps and small appliances new or just bough a million converters and stuck them on? The bookshelf’s wood look so beautiful with the lamp, if you decide on neon, yellow would be beautiful. Or soft lilac!

This looks so inviting. I love the piled up books and moments from travels. And great choice of photo.

Itching to paint the lamp…? Don’t do it! It looks so fresh and calm the way you’ve got it.
