What to Wear: Hosting a Jazz Soiree

by Amanda Jane Jones

Cree and I love to go out on the town…dinner jackets, heels…we love it all. That said, this year we’ve been trying our best to be more budget conscious. This ultimately means less nights out and more nights in (and some creative planning!). We are currently planning a Jazz Soiree (60’s shifts and tie clips are encouraged). I can think of nothing better than spending a night at home with friends listening to Chet Baker while wearing these fabulous Kate Spade gems.

Any additions to the evening’s jazzy playlist?

SHIFT / SHOES / EARINGS / MILES DAVIS / CHET BAKER

I could be wrong, but wouldn’t a night on the town be cheaper than $298 shoes?!

Hello! I found your blog through another friend’s blog and it is lovely πŸ™‚ I do have a question: who takes all the pictures with you in them?

Your posts about Paris are making me want to take a European vacation!

Love the idea of a jazzy evening! Have you listened to Hugh Laurie’s album? More blues than jazz but definitely worth a listen. Perfect late-night music.

I can’t decide which I “need” more, the shoes or the dress. Wait I just looked at the price of the dress. I guess I will have to “invest” in the shoes and find a knock-off dress. I love this post!

  5. Some West Coast cool jazz, for sure! I love Dave Brubeck – his music is super-accessible. If you like the song “Girl from Ipanema,” then you like Bossa Nova, so you’ll want Joao Gilberto and Antonio Jobim, too.

I was thinking the same as the first commenter – don’t the shoes blow the budget – but I will say that a jazz night sounds pretty nifty. I’ll have to ditto this idea.

Just today, I was loving this dress:

Not quite as short (not necessarily a bad thing?) and a lot more affordable.

Suggestions of real jazz music from my husband (a h-u-g-e jazz enthusiast):

    lionel hampton (vibraphone)
add duke ellington’s retrospection (great piano)
mal waldron’s impressions (great piano, great bop)
    john coltrane’s soultrane (great bop)
john coltrane’s giant steps (great post-bop)
duke ellington and john coltrane (great classic jazz)
lester leaps in (best…BEST jazz sax, better than chet baker)

Jewelries add to the glamour factor that uplifts the presence charm of an individual. It’s among the rare stuffs that are loved equally irrespective of genders. Indeed jewelries are something that completely results a change over the personality. Visit http://www.rightshopping.in/jewellery/index.asp today.

Cute idea! One tiny note… I believe you should use the word fewer instead of less in “less nights out”. Less is for volume and fewer is for quantity. Less orange juice, fewer oranges. Sorry to nerd out.

eeek! I love this! I don’t know any jazz specifics (I just turn on the cable channel that plays endless songs and turn off the screen), but I have always wanted to do something similar. There is just something so nostalgic and ‘grown-up’ about it all πŸ™‚ have fun!

I have been looking for a dress like this. But $450? Surely I can find one cheaper! Anyone know how I can score a simple shift dress that doesn’t cost an arm & leg???
