Cleaning Supplies

My cleaning supplies are getting a little worn down so when we moved I took the opportunity to buy some new ones. My older sister taught me when I was a teenager that if you can help it, everything you buy should be beautiful. So for example, if you need to buy a trash can, you should make sure to buy the most beautiful trash can you can find. I always try to buy things that look classic rather than plastic and contrived. Here are the cleaning supplies I bought: a beautiful italian mop, an industrial silver dustpan, and a classic corn broom {bought at my local Ace Hardware.} Some people might think it is silly that I care what my mop looks like but it really makes me happy anytime I open my hallway closet.

Also, we have to buy a vacuum this week. My sister Sara raves about the Roomba, I’ve also heard good things about the Dyson. Anyone have any good vacuum recommendations? I’ve never bought one before.

Jordan! this is why I think you’re so great. I totally agree with your philosophy.. and I have a very pretty dustpan too.

My friend recently acquired the Dyson and has raved about it non-stop. So much so, that we are considering it for our new house and went looking at them yesterday. The continuous suction and great filter are serious pros, and it works on all surfaces equally well.

Pretty cleaning supplies make cleaning so much more fun!

I own a Roomba for the upstairs (one room of carpet) and a Dyson for the downstairs (the whole thing is carpeted) and I love them both. Go for it!

Go for a Dyson! They come in great colors. The suction is fantastic and they are very easy to clean and maintain. Our carpets have never looked better… and I have 5 kids!

I have a Miele vaccum and I love it. My house has hard wood and rugs and it is the best for both. It is quiet, holds all the attachments unde the lid, and is light enough to carry while you do the stairs or whatever.

My sister-in-law just bought a Miele. It’s truly wonderful; sleek and functional. They have the S5980 Capricorn.

Jared and I love our Dyson, it is big though… I’ve never used the roomba. Maybe try the roomba out and make sure you have a good return policy. You can borrow our Dyson, or better yet, come over and test-drive it at my place!

I’m all about the Miele vaccuum. After a decade of stealing my mom’s Miele I’m a hardcore believer. it still works as good as the day she got it. I just got a new one and liked it so much I blogged about it here:
    http://cowgirlyougotthatsomething.blogspot.com/2007/10/weekend-roundup.html

If you’ve got hardwood and rugs it really is the best thing ever. Plus it’s ergonomic and my husband vaccuumed twice in one weekend cuz it was such a pleasure. And they come in such fun colours. I was a bit sad that the one I bought didn’t come in the melon yellow…I’m a geek.

I love my Dyson. You don’t have to buy filters for it and it doesn’t have a belt either. You just dump the bin out when it’s full and wash the reusable filter every 6 months. It’s durable and easy to use.

The Dyson has changed my life! Not to be dramatic, but it is a serious powerhouse of a vacuum. It sucks up junk that our old beast left kicking about. The best part–if you go to Bed, Bath & Beyond with one of their 20% off coupons, they will honor the discount toward the vacuum! (At least they did here in Denver.)

I have to agree.. the Dyson changed my life as well. It seems ridiculous, but this vacuum gets dirt you had no idea you had, you never have to change a bag, emptying the canister is super easy, and the detachable hose is great for getting into little nooks. We love it! I never thought I would love a vacuum.

Dyson lovers are merely people who have never had the pleasure to meet an ELECTROLUX.

The Oxygen line is my favorite. It is the only company that makes something that will fit all the way under every piece of furniture in the house without using some attachment. I have mostly hardwoods and heavy wool rugs. It is perfect for all.

AND it’s pretty. AND it is small and easy to store.

we have a roomba and love it! He gets SO much dirt every time we set him off.

And there’s nothing silly about surrounding yourself with beautiful things. I’m a teacher and (trust me) things get get drab QUICK if you don’t inflect your room with things YOU love as well.

I have a miele, which is beautiful, but then we bought a dyson to replace a broken vacuum for the basement. well, the dyson is the biore strip of vacuums, and the miele hasn’t seen much vacuuming action since. I am continually amazed at how much stuff the dyson picks up.

    Jordan,

If you have both carpet and hardwood, I recommend a canister vac.

Miele Carina is a great one, as is the Hoover Windtunnel Bagless. See this site:
    http://www.consumersearch.com/
    www/house_and_home/canister-vacuums/
(Disclaimer: I write for the site,
but I didn’t write this piece).
I bought my vac (a Bosch) new on eBay, and I love it.
    Good luck!
    Regards,
    Molly

I went to the vacuum repair place to purchase a vacuum or at least see which ones they can repair. I am on my third vacuum, and decided this was the way to go after discovering that many of these vacuums would have to be shipped to be repaired- at my cost! You are supposed to have your vacuum checked out, belts changed, filters, etc. every year. Also, they told me that for people with allergies you should only do a vacuum with bags- bagless just throw dust back in the air.

i have no opinion on vacuums but i agree that pretty things make a huge difference. i got a little bit teased when i bought really pretty match books but everytime i use them they make me smile.

You can’t go wrong with a Dyson!! As a matter of fact, you will fall in love with it! I *heart* mine sooooooooooooo much!

We changed the industrial kirby for a dyson last year and i love my dyson, i’ve got the animal hair one (we have dogs) and its incredible!

I always thought that the house was clean, but the stuff the dyson lifts I never knew was there in the first place, I get obsessive about it now though, that is the only negative i can think of.

It is so easy to clean too, and it is good if you have dust allergies and things.

sorry, I sound like I sell them.

    Hi,

You have a nice blog. I just thought of mentioning about this website http://www.dustmitesallergies.org. They seem to offer specialized advice of dust mites allergies.
