I miss mine – cruising to Zion when I had no cares in the world. I think if I got another it would taint my good memories of my old bug.

One evening we went to dinner in Springdale with the Sappingtons in our VW bug. I remember that Linda, the sort of person who had every hair in place, sat in the back. The wind blows from the back and every hair on her head was frantically blowing frontward, more or less. Also, we tried to talk but we couldn’t hear each other. 🙂

My first car was a VW convertible I found in the want ads of the Van Nuys Greensheet when I taught at Sutter Jr. High in the San Fernando Valley. The bug came standard VW beige with black top, a combination I loved. However, it was old. I could see glimpses of the road beneath me through the car floor. The “rag top” really was in rags, so that tendrils of fabric hung around my head while I drove.

Since the car needed attention, when generous Mike came from Provo to visit, he planned to surprise me while I was at school. He put a new black top on my bug and left it at a lot to be painted. He had asked me in advance my favorite color in general–an impossible question–and I said blue. Well, I learned that the car was being painted before Earl Scheib had time to finish, so I asked some direct questions. We were in his car at the time, and as we drove Mike pointed out a sample of the intense crayon/turquoise blue he had ordered. I was surprised, alright. We rushed to the paint place to try and stop them, but as we pulled into the lot we all screamed (Aunt Janet was with us, I think). We could see my little bug in the booth, being jetted with the unfortunate shade of blue–sort of the color at the bottom of my computer screen.

We smiled about it ever after.
