Giant Hanging Paper Flowers

Spring!! I’m so excited, I can hardly stand it. I’m more than ready to pack away all the wool, and exchange it all for cotton, linen, and — color! In celebration of the world’s most welcomed season, we made this giant hanging wild rose installation for your next springtime party! Read on to see how you can make it!

We were inspired by Lord and Taylor’s 424 Fifth campaign to make this darling immersive photobooth. It would be a perfect addition to a garden tea party for a bridal or baby shower! Make extra petals to use as props — or to sprinkle around the rest of the party.

Giant Hanging Paper Flowers | Oh Happy Day!

Materials Needed: 26” Savage seamless paper roll (in coral), pencil, scissors, watercolors (in crimson), 2″ paintbrush, hot glue gun, stapler, crepe paper (in lemon), x-acto knife, ruler, twisted paper cord (in green), gaffers tape

Step 1: Draw a large petal shape on the seamless paper. Ours was roughly 18” long and 11.5” wide. You’ll need six petals per flower, so cut a few out at a time to save time.

Step 2: Apply watercolor to the petals, leaving the top ⅓ of the petals unpainted. Paint the petals a pink gradient, with the darkest pink at the bottom. The watercolor will also make the petals curl naturally.

Step 3: Crease each petal in half, lengthwise. Then, crease the outer edges to the center line.

Step 4: Cut along the bottom of the centerline about 3” in then overlap the ends of the petal to form a curved petal. Hot glue the ends together to secure the shape.

Step 5: For pollen, cut an 8” by 18” piece of crepe paper. Fold the crepe paper a few times and make ¼” wide cuts down the length of the crepe paper, stopping 2” before you reach the end. Unfold the crepe paper to reveal fringe. Then, twist each strand.

Step 6: Hot glue the end of the twisted paper cord to the 2” section of the yellow crepe paper. Roll the crepe paper around the cord and hot glue to secure.

Step 7: Staple the sides of the ends of two petals together. Continue adding and stapling petals until you form a flower shape, with a small opening in the center. Thread the stem through the opening so that the petals rest on the pollen. Trim the pollen so it peeks out from the petals.

Step 8: Hot glue the petals together intermittently so that the flower takes on a lampshade-like shape.

Step 9: Unwrap pieces of the twisted paper cord and and cut into leaf shapes. Secure the leaves to the stem with glue.

Step 10: Tape the stem to the ceiling to hang the flower.
