Vintage Valentine Heart Boxes

We thought we’d take a stab at re-creating those kitschy, over-the-top Valentine’s Day heart-shaped gift boxes from days of yore. Adorned with frilly ribbon, crepe paper and cute sayings, these would make a perfect chocolate-filled gift for a Galentine or two!

Continue to find out how to make them!

Materials needed: Cardstock, paper heart box template, scissors, crepe paper, ruler, x-acto knife, satin ribbon, hot glue gun

Step 1: Make a heart-shaped box using our DIY Paper Heart Box tutorial here or purchase one at your local craft store.
Step 2: Cut 2” strips of crepe paper using a ruler and x-acto knife. Create a ruffled edge on one side by grasping the top edge of the length of the crepe paper strip with both hands and stretching the paper. Continue to ruffle the length of the crepe paper.
Step 3: Attach crepe paper to the edge of the lid of the heart box such that it extends past the edge. Scrunch the crepe paper when attaching to the glue. Continue to hot glue the paper to the box until you have completed the perimeter of the heart.
Step 4: Cut a smaller heart out of cardstock that will fit the center of your box.
Step 5: Cut 2” strips of crepe paper in a different color and ruffle the edges. Hot glue the ruffled crepe paper to the back of the cardstock heart using the same method as in Step 3. Then, place the smaller heart on top of the heart-shaped box. The outer layer of crepe paper on the box should still be visible. Trim the cardstock heart ruffles a little as needed.
Step 6: Hot glue the back of the ruffled cardstock heart to the center of the heart box. Add some sweet surprises inside your box and you’re good to go!
