I’ve used the round honeycomb paper balls as ornaments before but we were playing around with our honeycomb paper and figured out we could make our own in whatever shape and color we wanted. They turned out so cute. I love that you can make whatever color scheme you wanted.
Materials Needed: Printable ornament template, cardstock, sharp scissors, honeycomb pad, Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky glue, embroidery floss, hot glue gun
Step 1: Print on cardstock and cut out shapes using the printable ornament template. Make a set of two for each shape.
Step 2: Orient the honeycomb pad such that the lines run horizontally. Apply a thin layer of Aleene’s on the back of the cardstock shape and adhere to the left edge of the honeycomb pad. Let dry under a heavy object (like a book!).
Step 3: Leaving a tiny margin around the shape, cut the shape from the pad using a pair of sharp scissors.
Step 4: Trace the honeycomb shape and cut out a second layer of honeycomb to the exact same size. Apply a thin layer of Aleene’s and glue the two pads together. Glue the second piece of cardstock to the other side of the pad and let dry.
Step 5: Apply a layer of glue along the flat, interior edge of the honeycomb shape from end to end. Let dry completely under a heavy object. This will help bind the sheets together when you open the ornament later!
Step 6: Cut an 8” piece of embroidery floss. Knot the two ends together. Glue the loop along the interior edge of the ornament. You can add tassels to your ornaments, too — just tie two 8” pieces of embroidery floss through the two ends of a new package of floss. Tie additional pieces of floss around the ends. Fold the package, and cut in half. You now have two tassels! Easy! Glue the loop along the interior edge of the ornament and let dry.
Step 7: Open the ornament. Add a dab of hot glue on the cardstock edge and affix. Hold until cool, then you’re all set! Hang your ornament on the tree — or gift to a friend!
