Heres a nice and simple teacher’s gift idea to coincide with upcoming Teacher Appreciation week (May 2nd- May 6th) – an “Apple” shaped surprise ball!! Surprise Balls are one of the most exciting gifts to receive because the mere process of unravelling it is a gift in itself! The fantastic thing about a surprise ball is that a small cash gift could so easily be tucked inside, and what hardworking teacher wouldn’t appreciate that?
In case you’re unfamiliar with surprise balls, they are simply crepe streamers that are wrapped round and round until they form a ball shape. As the recipient slowly unravels the ball, gifts that have been hidden amongst the layers of streamers fall out. Once completely unravelled they will have a cute collection of trinkets!
Some ideas for your teacher’s surprise ball gifts include:
- Cash
- A thank-you note
- Bath bombs (for the center).
- Mini smiley face balloons
- Enamel pins
- Mini Confetti
- Candy
- Temporary tattoos
- Stickers
- Colorful mini bunting
- Cute enamel pins

Materials Needed: Crepe paper party streamer in red, tiny gifts (in sizes: small, smaller, and smaller), crepe paper in green, scissors, floral paddle wire, floral tape, wire cutters, Aleene’s Quick Dry Tacky Glue
Step 2: Cut a leaf shape from the green crepe paper. Add small ridges to the edges to mimic the appearance of an apple leaf. The leaf should be between 2-3” long.
Step 3: Cut two 2” long pieces of floral wire. Wrap one piece in floral wire from top to bottom.
Step 4: Tape the crepe paper leaf to the remaining piece of floral wire. Bend the wire in half to a 90 degree angle. Tape the two pieces of wire together. You have your stem!
Step 6: Starting with the largest of the tiny gifts, begin wrapping your items in the crepe paper streamer. Make sure to wrap each item completely before moving onto the next to maintain the awe of a big reveal!
Step 7: Move onto your second biggest item. Start focusing on building an apple-like shape. You’ll want to be strategic in placing your items from here on out. Feel free to occasionally dab a bit of tacky glue to the crepe paper if you need to keep it in place.
Step 8: As the package begins resembling the shape of a ball, hold it with your thumb and index finger on opposing sides. Keep your fingers in this position as much as possible, applying a little pressure at all times. This will help create the convex shape that are at the apple’s stem and stamen as you add the remaining smaller items.
Step 9: Wrap the remaining items into the streamer, continuing to build toward an apple-like shape. Nearing the end, wrap top to bottom only, twisting the streamer at the top and bottom-most points.
Step 10: Once you’ve wrapped your last gift, cut the streamer and glue in place on the bottom.
Step 11: Take the stem you made in Steps 2-5, and bend the end to a sharp 90 degree angle.
Step 12: Add a dab of glue to the top of the apple, a few layers in. Insert the stem and hold in place until dry. You’re all set!

A little rubber stamp with a half size felt pen, possibly a tiny book (I make books) would be nice inclusions too.
