Have Your Cake

One small thing that stuck out to me when I was reading Julia Child’s biography My Life in France was how after she moved to Marseilles and the weather was bad so she was bored. She complains how her stuff was all packed up in boxes and she couldn’t even go home and make a cake. I like the idea of making a delicious fancy cake when you are bored or when there is nothing going on. I made a little resolution that I want to start baking cakes more on random occasions. (Plus it is such a good reason to invite friends over last minute.)

Yesterday I just read about NPR's Melissa Gray, who baked a cake each week and brought it in to work. Now she has a book called All Cakes Considered. http://www.amazon.com/All-Cakes-Considered-Melissa-Gray/dp/0811867811

I'm considering making that one of my 2010 intentions–bake something new each week. Good way to try out recipes that just sit in my pile.

I loved that book too. It was fun to read it while in France. I felt like I could imagine her, an American in France, so well. If only I had her French language skills though! I also appreciated that she was into productivity and not so much the TV. Moi aussi.

So funny that you mention this–last night as I was up feeding my lil man I was watching "Cake Boss" on TLC and now I can't stop thinking about CAKE!On this tired November day I could use a rich Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting-YUM!

I do this all the time, but somehow I still don't have people over. I do drop baked goods off at the neighbors and friends–does that count?

I just made a ridiculously easy chocolate cake yesterday. It requires a bowl and a spoon–no messy mixers. Even though it is vegan, my omni family thought it tasted absolutely delicious, and that's plain, without frosting.

    I love your blog 🙂

And I totally like the idea!
After watching Julie & Julia I promised myself so many things about cooking & baking. So today you inspired me and I will make something from Pioneer Woman, my Julie.

    Hey!

That's exactly what I do when I'm home and bored. I made a huge chocolate cake on Sunday and we're still enjoying it!

I always find that I end up baking when I am feeling blue or down or needing some sort of a pick me up. Not sure if it is the idea of something sweet or if it is that I first starting baking before I even knew how to cook, but there is something soothing about baking. And a big bonus that it tastes great in the end!

My fiance is Scottish and we will certainly be going back there to live at some point. So bad weather, yeah. Last time we lived there I actually did make wonderful things when the weather was bad (it's such a great way to ease boredom, really), but then I gained 15 pounds. So worth it.

I'm all about the breads, cookies and muffins – they feel more managable. But this time of year it's all about pie!!
