Living Room Tour

When the guy downstairs started playing his loud music yesterday {like he does everyday}, all I could think was “I’m SO GLAD I’m moving.” But in general I’m really really sad to leave my apartment. This is our first apartment, the one we moved into after we got married. Two and half years… I really love my neighborhood too. Anyway, I decided to take pictures of each part of the house for posterity. When I first got married I was so gung-ho about decorating and then I sort of got absorbed in other things. There is still a lot I wanted to do to the apartment that I never got around to. This week I’m giving a tour of my apartment, room by room. Today, the living room.

Picture 1: Art books organized by color. I love our English rolled arm sofa, it is so classic. It can go with modern or traditional. I got my zebra nailhead ottoman from Spiegel {their now defunct furniture line.} The artichoke floor lamp from Anthropologie {I got it on super sale, I was so stoked.}

Picture 2: My antique little french chair. It is all that is left from all that french furniture I bought after we got married. The painting is a study of a Cassandra Barney painting, the result of Paul trying to teach me to paint one night. I LOVE my tall linen curtains. They are cheapies from IKEA and I sort of always meant to hem them so they weren’t in such pools of fabric, but I sort of like how they look.
Picture 3: I did a ton of research to find the best flat screen TV. I liked this Sony Aquos because it was only 26″ and didn’t take over the room. I even did the research to figure out how to install it with no wires {only two small holes in the drywall!} The big box under the TV stand is holding our wireless router and lots of other various wires. The other two boxes are holding our DVD collections. I’m pretty good at keeping certain kinds of plants alive. This mostly includes topiaries and succulents.

Picture 4: I found this light fixture after seeing something similiar in the first issue of Domino. I really really love it. I got it on ebay. It doesn’t work in the new apartment, I’m still deciding if I’m going to sell it or store it.
Picture 5: The table {you can’t really see it} is from Crate and Barrel. The chairs I got on super sale from Hold Everything. The parsons desk is from West Elm, so is the rolling filing cabinet. The desk chair is new and from Overstock.com. The large magnet board usually peeks out from behind the open door. I made it with a large piece of sheet metal from Home Depot and found {after much searching} a frame that wasn’t ridiculously expensive off of pictureframes.com.

You’re smart to take photos. I did that with Rob and my first apartment and love to look back and reminisce.

I can’t wait to see what you do with the new place!

The room is even more pleasant to be in than the pictures show. It’s both comfortable and beautiful.

    Hi There,

I am a daily reader, but never leave a comment. But today something really caught my eye! That magnet board next to the desk, that’s just sheet metal??? How did you do it? Please share, I am in desperate need of a large magnet board for my office.

Thanks for all the fabulous inspiration! And we just put our place on the market, so I will definitely be taking pics of each room.

I immediately recognized that painting as a “Barney”. I would say that you did a very good job if I mistook it…

    Well done you… taking pictures.
I have NO pictures of my favorite apartment from 5 years ago… not one shot of the 1920s stove, the french doors to the bedroom, the warped and worn wood floors. I really regret that.

Your place is lovely. Now for the fun of learning where things will go in your new place. I love that part – Hey… the bookshelf I bought 20 years ago when I was in college fits perfectly on this short wall! Who would have predicted?! And above it? The artwork that Kimberly gave me when she moved away? What else?!
    Whoo hoo!

A Good Gray is Hard to Find. I’ve been squinting at tiny paint chips, and larger paint boards, and little magazine photos of rooms with gray paint for months now. I go to Home Depot, I come home, squint at grays; go to the Benjamin Moore store, come home, squint. You have gray in your living room. Which gray does it sport? Have you felt good about it?

That is such a great idea. I wish I had taken photos of all the places we have lived. When our family went to Europe, I filmed each place we stayed (hotel, hostel, etc.), but had never thought of photographing our home. Strange. I love the personality of your apartment. Charming. I am sad for you to leave it too.ru

Lynda: It is pretty straight forward. Buy sheet metal from Home Depot and hang it on your wall. If you want add a frame.

Amanda: Not sure on the gray, it is a Martha Stewart I’ll have to double check it.
