Is it even Easter without Peeps? I don’t think I can recall a single Easter basket I’ve ever received that has been devoid of the sugar-coated marshmallow treats. Why not celebrate the Easter season with a giant version in the form of a pinata?! Perhaps even filled with actual Peeps? I’m just saying, it would be pretty epic. We even added false snow to mimic the sugary coating! Scroll down to get the full DIY!
Materials needed: Large pieces of cardboard, projector, pencil, ruler, x-acto knife, fishing line, packing tape, scissors, bubble wrap, gesso, acrylic paint (in yellow), spray adhesive, artificial snow, dark brown cardstock
Step 1: Project an image of a marshmallow Peeps bunny and trace onto a large piece of cardboard. Then trace the design within the outline, allowing a ½” margin. The dips and curves of this inner outline will be exaggerated but will end up more shallow once the pinata is wrapped in bubble wrap.
Step 2: Cut out the design with an x-acto knife. Then trace the design onto another piece of cardboard for a mirror image and cut out.
Step 3: Cut long strips of cardboard 4” wide. Tape the strip along the outer edge of the cutout with packing tape. Then tape the mirror image onto the other side. Be sure to leave a trap door so you can fill the pinata with treats.
Step 4: Make a small hole at the top of both ears. Cut two pieces of cardboard about 2” by 2” and make a small hole at the center of each. Cut a piece of fishing line about 24” long and thread it through the pinata and cardboard square. Knot the fishing wire and tape to the cardboard square. Repeat for the other side then tie the two ends of the fishing line into a loop to hang.
Step 5: Wrap the pinata with bubble wrap and secure with packing tape to give the pinata a rounded, marshmallow-like shape. Tape down any openings and flaps for a smooth finish.
Step 6: Paint a coat of gesso onto the pinata and let dry completely. Then, paint the pinata yellow and let dry.
Step 7: Spray the pinata with spray adhesive, then sprinkle on artificial snow. Repeat for the remaining sides. This will give the pinata the sugary look of an actual Peeps bunny!
Step 8: Cut three circles out of dark brown cardstock that are roughly 1 ¼” in diameter and glue to the pinata for the bunny’s eyes and nose.
Step 9: Fill the pinata and tape the trap door shut. Hang the pinata and you’re ready to party!
