Colorblock Film Photobooth

One of my favorite things at Color Factory are the bold bands of color on nearly every surface (have you been?). Between the facade, stairs, chapel, and windows — stripes are all around. Wouldn’t it be awesome to bring a little piece of Color Factory to a birthday party?

Inspired by our pop-up exhibition in San Francisco, this photobooth uses colored cello wrap to make translucent pops of color in the same bold stripes. Just suspend the cellophane rolls from the ceiling, and secure them to the floor with a long piece of double-stick tape!

Materials Needed: Rolls of colored cellophane (we got ours at Party City), twine, scissors, 3M small wire hooks, double-sided Shurtape

Step 1: Thread a long piece of twine through the roll of cellophane. Leave 12” of extra twine on both ends of the roll.

Step 2: Mark the measurement of the length of the cellophane roll on the ceiling in pencil, then attach a 3M ceiling hook to each mark.

Step 3: Cut a piece of Shurtape the length of the cellophane roll. Apply the tape to the beginning of the roll, then remove the paper backing.

Step 3: Have a friend help you hold the cellophane roll while you tie each end of the twine to a 3M hook. Hang the roll as close to the ceiling as you can, then trim off the excess twine.

Step 4: Carefully unroll the cellophane until it reaches the ground. Stick the Shurtape to the floor to anchor the cellophane, then tighten the roll until the cellophane is taut.

Step 5: Repeat with the remaining cellophane rolls, layering them to create more dimension. You’re all set!

To get an idea of how much room is needed to replicate this backdrop, can you clarify how much space, particularly width and depth, this photo booth installation took up?

Our install was about 10 feet wide and 6 feet deep, but you could scale it however works best for your room!

I love this! I really wish I got to see Color Factory. You should make a pop-up Color Factory on the East coast next year.

Such a high impact idea! I can imagine using shades of blue and green cellophane, with hanging sea creatures, for an underwater themed kids party too 🙂
