Balloon Letters DIY & A Giveaway!

I’m obsessed with this easy and simple DIY today from Jodi Levine. If you don’t know Jodi and her new-ish blog Supermakeit, you’ve probably already seen her work from her time as an Editor at Martha Stewart. I’ve been a long time fan. These balloon letters are in her new book, Paper Goods Projects, which is finally out TODAY. It is one of the best craft books I’ve ever seen. It’s a book about how to make things from easy-to-find materials at supermarkets, big box stores, or your own recycling bin. Today we are giving away TWO new copies for Oh Happy Day readers. You can see the contest details and the DIY instructions by clicking through below!

Balloon Letters DIY

Balloon Letters by Jodi Levine

Create a big, bright, happy message with twisty balloon letters! There are a few ways to make these. Using clear adhesive dots is essential to each technique.

Materials: Pencil and paper, balloon pump, twisty balloons, scissors, clear adhesive dots

Step 1: Sketch out your message and what colors each balloon segment will be so you know how many balloons you will need for each letter. Some simpler letters (like I, P, and D) can be made with only one balloon.
Step 2: Inflate the balloon to get the thickness that you want. Pinch the balloon where you want the length to end, and release air from that point only. Knot the balloon at the pinched spot, and cut off the excess balloon.
Step 3: For letters with straight lines and no curves or twists (like H and T), each line is adhered with an adhesive dot where the line segments touch.
Step 4: For simple curved letters, like P and D, twist at the point that the line needs to turn, curve the balloon around, and adhere the end with an adhesive dot.
Step 5: B and R: Start by making a P (see step 4). To make a B: Inflate a short length of balloon and knot. Curve it into a backward C-shape, and adhere both ends to the P with sticky dots. Similarly, to make an R: Add a short diagonal line to a P with an adhesive dot.
Step 6: A and Y: Make a V-shape by twisting the middle of the balloon and adding an adhesive dot on the inside of the twist. For the A, add a short straight balloon inside the V with adhesive dots. For the Y, add a short straight balloon to the bottom of the V with adhesive dots.

I had no idea Jodi had a book and blog! Where have I been?! I first remember seeing her on the old, old Martha show, like, way before her live studio audience show, and being SO inspired by her. This was so long before blogs and Instagram and Pinterest and she was the first person I saw doing things that we do now. I’ll never forget the segment of Martha going to her wedding and she had made all of her decorations and BOUQUET out of paper and gave everyone parasols. She was so ahead of her time! Anyway, I’d like to add this book to my collection to continue to learn from this creative lady, she was one of my earliest influencers after all!

This book looks so good! As much as I think I can be a creative person, when it comes to doing crafts with my kids I get stumped, and we end up just coloring or painting. Not bad things, but a change would be nice. The coffee filter flowers are gorgeous! I remember her wedding in Martha Stewart Weddings. So beautiful and unique! She is just so great!
