I love making custom paper boxes in unique shapes because I think the best presents come in packaging that’s almost as fun as what’s inside. This size of box is perfect for things like a small cupcake, a bag of candy, a cute pair of socks, or a nice travel-sized cosmetic. But when you put together a gift box this cute, it takes some of the pressure off what to put in it!
You will need: crepe paper streamers in pink and yellow, craft knife, pencil, bone folder, fun paper straws, glue pen, pink gelly roll pen, ruler, scissors, fringing scissors, foam dots, hot glue gun, and cover weight paper in pink and yellow.
Step 1: Cut two 3″ by 11″ strips of pink paper.
Step 2: Using the bone folder, score each strip .5″ from the edge of one long side.
Step 3: Cut tabs to the scored line, making each tab about .25″ wide.
Step 4: Crease the tabs so they fold down.
Step 5: Roll each strip into a cylinder and use the glue pen to glue closed, overlapping the paper about .5″. Make sure that one cylinder is slightly larger than the other so that you can fit the smaller one snugly inside the bigger one.
Step 6: Use the larger cylinder to trace a circle (it will be about 3.25″ in diameter) and cut it out. Cut out another larger circle (which will be about 4″ in diameter).
Step 7: Using the glue pen, attach the smaller circle to the top of the larger cylinder by gluing the circle on top of the folded tabs. This will become the top of the box. Use the same method to attach the larger circle to the smaller cylinder, which will become the bottom of the box. The bottom of the box will have a small lip so that it’s easy to pull the two apart.
Step 8: Fold a few lengths of pink crepe paper streamer in half and cut fringe into it with the fringing scissors.
Step 9: Use the glue pen to attach the fringe trim around the top piece of the box, along its bottom and top edge.
Step 10: Fold the yellow streamer into a small stack and cut out a flame shape. Cut lengths of the straws, about 2.25″ each, and attach the flames in the top of the candles with the hot glue gun.
Step 11: Glue the candles onto the top of the box.
Step 12: Cut a small banner shape out of the yellow paper.
Step 13: Write a birthday message on the banner with the gelly roll pen.
Step 14: Attach the banner to the box with foam dots.
