In the springtime, my obsession with flowers hits an all-time high. I especially like experimenting with paper flowers because they’re so easy to work with. These party hats are especially festive. You could pair them with the Giant Paper Flower Party Hats we made earlier this week, or highlight them on their own. They are easy to make and are so fun.
Materials: Party Hat Template, Colored Paper, Crepe Paper, Jewelry Wire, Elastic, X-Acto Knife, Scissors, Tape
Step 1: Build the party hat (instructions here.)
Step 2: Cut out two small pieces of crepe paper and a two 10 inch pieces of jewelry wire.
Step 3: Crumble one of the crepe paper pieces into a ball and cover the piece of the wire so that the ball folds over the wire.
Step 4: Fold the other piece of crepe paper over the ball and squeeze around the bottom of the ball.
Step 5: Cut small petals out of crepe paper. Shape these petals with your fingers.
Step 6: Begin placing petals around the ball base of the flower and wrap with the second piece of wire to secure in place. Continue until you are satisfied with the look of the petals and have finished the length of the wire.
Step 7: Repeat steps 2-5 until you have 5 crepe paper flowers.
Step 8: Use your X-acto knife to cut out in “X” in your hat and string the flower wire through the “X.”
Step 9: Tape the wire in place on the inside of the hat.
Step 10: Repeat step 7&8 until you’ve used all of the flowers.
Step 11: After measuring around your (or a child’s) chin, cut the elastic and thread through the opposite hole, tying a knot to secure it.

These are so beautiful! I wish I had a little girl party to throw. And that child is such a doll. Straight out of a catalog from the ’60s.

Argh, I screwed up the two-step process to post a comment, and now I have to type my comment again. Do you really have that much problem with spammers?
Anyway, I think these hats are pretty cool. I’ve been reading the blogs for the last couple weeks in reverse order, so I’ve already seen some of the paper hat designs you’ve posted after these. Like I mentioned in the confetti paper hats blog, I’m not a big fan of party hats. I have bad luck with the strings breaking and I find them uncomfortable anyway. But turning them into a DIY project like this does make them look really cool, so maybe I will give them another try sometime. These are my favorite one you’ve posted recently for sure!
