Backyard Movie Night: Invitations

This is the first in a 4 part series on How to Throw a Backyard Movie Night sponsored by Skinny Cow.

I am so excited to be back for the summer and I’ve made a big list of parties I want to throw. First on that list is an outdoor movie party. Our new apartment has a really great back yard, perfect for a movie night. I thought it might be fun to do a four part series on how to throw a movie night. First step is sending out invitations. I asked my friend Ruel Brown to design a card for us to send out. We just inserted our text in the empty marquee sign, printed them out (they are 4″x 6″) and then sent them out in some minty green envelopes I picked up at a local paper store. Are you going to throw a movie night this summer? You can download your own free template of the invitation right here.

Love this! I want to have a backyard movie party so much, but in Kansas…. well, the weather is a little temperamental.

How fun!!!!!! My friends and I used to have movie nights in the park. We’d bring a small TV–this was before the convenience of laptops–and plug it in at the pavillion. We’d bring all our fav snacks and plenty of blankets and pillows to keep us comfy. I miss those days!

This is so great! We’ve been planning on throwing our very first outdoor movie night this year, and I’ve been eyeing different outdoor spaces for inspiration. Love the invitation and can’t wait to see your other ideas, too! Thank you for always sharing such wonderful ideas!

I love the idea and the template! I’ve thought: let’s do it! But then I remeber I don’t have a backyard and we’ve moved to a new city, so we still don’t have friends. Snif.

Love this idea! I can’t wait to see the rest of the series. I remember when I was kid my friends and I would make a car out of cardboard and go to a a “drive in movie” when we’d watch movies. We made popcorn and everything. Super fun!

We LOVE throwing backyard movie nights!! Can’t wait to see what your ideas are. The key seems to be having a great big good quality screen. We’re lucky we came upon one for free. Next it’s popcorn in individual paper bags plus sleeping bags, loads of pillows and blankets for kids. We set up an activity for the kids who get bored of the movie and don’t want to sit (like a drawing table). Then at the other end of the yard there is sangria, food and lanterns for the grown-up party.

We love Ruel! So fun to see his name mentioned here! We have one of his drawings in our kitchen and he created some awesome custom Vans for my husband’s birthday years ago.

Oh, wow! You are right in the center of things! I miss Chestnut street. Go to Dragon Well for us. Congrats on the apartment. Nothing like a great yard, and you’re right near Moscone park!

I love these invitations. We don’t have a backyard, but have a really large rooftop deck in Chicago. We throw an end of the school year movie night party on our deck…complete with bartender and lots of desserts. It’s awesome to see the view of the city behind the screen.

Lovely idea! So now I want to know – what movie will you show? How do you take everyone’s tastes into account?

How funny, I just posted a blog entry about birthday ideas and this is one of them. We also have a perfect backyard for a outdoor movie night and I can’t wait to do it. Looking forward to hearing your take on how to host one.
