I hadn’t planned to blog about all these treats we sent my friend Mark as a thank you for programming my new site, but Alexis took such great photos and I would never turn down an opportunity to talk about baked goods.
Day One: We sent a Root Beer Sampler.
Day Two: Alexis made her famous chocolate chip cookie and wrapped them in brown wax sleeves and bakers twine. Do you have a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe? I’m obsessed with this recipe.
Day Three: We dropped off a box of Beard Papa cream puffs. Do you know these? It is a Japanese chain that has come to the US in the last 5 or so years. They use really fresh ingredients including raw vanilla bean for the pudding. You have to eat them fast because after a few hours they get a little soggy. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it. Have you tried Beard Papa’s?

Not sure if you are still looking for treat ideas but here is a variation on what to do with your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe: cookie dough truffles!
http://theyuppielifestyle.blogspot.com/2011/06/recipe-cookie-dough-truffles.html
Also, the Cowgirl Creamery Sidekick makes some amazing gougères. The pastry is very similar to Beard Papa’s to me, but instead of filled with custard, they are filled with creamy herbed cheese.

America’s Test Kitchen cookies were my all-time fave too (browned butter makes everything better, right?), but try these: http://annies-eats.com/2008/09/08/thick-and-chewy-chocolate-chip-cookies/
I think they might be the winner for me.

oh, i love the chocolate chip cookie recipe from cook’s illustrated (maybe a little different than the one you linked to?) i’m sure you read the nyt article about the perfect cookie, but i have started refrigerating the dough for a couple days before baking, and let me tell you, flavor elevation! highly suggested.

Those cookies look so delish!!!!!! But would love to have a cream puff!!!!!! THe brown wax sleeves would be so great to have, as I bake for people all the time, so I was wondering if you knew where I could order some from? I have looked online and have had no luck yet! Thank you for sharing the choc chip cookie recipe, will have to give this a try!!!!

I wish I could ask for baked goods instead of money for doing favours for friends haha Oh Beard Papa’s! I tried this for the first time when I was visiting my family last year in Vancouver. I wanted to go back every day and try their flavour of the day.

I love Beard Papa! When I lived in LA, we used to get them all the time on Sawtelle. We’ve moved to Northern CA and now get them whenever we go to San Francisco. One time we drove to Yerba Buena just to get Beard Papa. My husband dropped me off, I bought a bag, and he drove back around to pick me up just so we could have some for the drive home!

I used to work at a Beard Papa’s! Oh, the hours I’d spend slaving over vanilla beans, it takes so much labor just to get enough vanilla for one batch of filling!
@Rebecca: there’s a BP in Shinjuku station, or you can visit the gorgeous flagship shop in Ginza. 😉

what a wonderful thank you! what fun it must be for your friend. you know how much we all love to receive packages or mail… especially such pretty ones filled with tasty treats. where can i sign up to do a favor for you? 🙂
for the previous comment about the wax paper sleeves: i use something similar, if not exactly the same and i get them at whole foods. they are a box of wax paper bags that we use in lieu of plastic sandwich bags. very inexpensive, too.

I have a very dear memory of eating a freshly filled Beard Papa cream puff with my husband in Shinjuku station. We had gotten a box for omiyage and decided to see what all the fuss was about. We proceeded to finish the box on our train ride home. You brought me right back to that moment in time.
