We stopped in Utah this weekend to drop off Moses at my in-laws house. {Thanks Don and Linda!} So I took the opportunity to throw myself a birthday party. Since it is kind of in the middle of nowhere and since there is lots of snow I decided to launch some sky lanterns. {The paper is non flammable so as long as it isn’t windy it is pretty safe but with the snow it was extra safe.} Here are some pictures with Paul’s family and a few of my friends. Don’t ask me about the legality of these because I didn’t even look into it. Also, the package says “100% biodegradable” but I’m guessing it isn’t very eco friendly since we were only able to track down a couple after the descended. {Here is a video to a sky lantern festival–they have them in several places all over the world.}

They’re very popular in Argentina during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. We throw fireworks at night to receive those dates and the sky lanters fill the skies. Tha bad thing is that one of them got on fire and almost falls on me. Thank God for the wind that blew it away.

Nice! I photographed a wedding in Germany last summer and this was one of the traditions they did…beautiful red ones. They said the same thing about the legality, basically, don’t ask.

I grew up in South Africa and we built something like that in the 6th grade. The whole grade let them off together. Probably not the safest thing for 6th graders to be doing, but it was something they’d done for years.
I love that you did this for your birthday!

We had these in Iraq. The people there had never seen anything like it…and when we then explained the idea of a hot air balloon they were amazed.
