Rainbow Costume

At Oh Happy Day we are borderline obsessive about color. Rainbows, therefore, are one of our favorite things and we would be remiss to not attempt to turn it into a costume! I think my favorite part of this cute project is the adorable balloon clouds on the ends! Read on to find out how to make it…

Materials Needed: Large pieces of cardboard, corrugated paper, pencil, ruler, x-acto knife, hot glue gun, spray paint (in white), acrylic paint (in rainbow colors), paintbrushes, 5” mini balloons (in white), balloon hand pump

Step 1: Cut a large rainbow shape out of cardboard with an x-acto knife. Trace the shape onto another piece of cardboard and cut out.

Step 2: Cut a piece of corrugated paper long enough to fit around the perimeter of the rainbow, leaving the bottom arc open for the wearer’s body. Hot glue to secure the corrugated paper along the outer edge of the rainbow shape. Then, hot glue the second rainbow to the other side. Cut head and arm holes, using the wearer for reference.

Step 3: Spray paint the rainbow base white and let dry completely.

Step 4: Use a pencil to section off the rainbow into equal arcs, one for each color.

Step 5: Time to paint on some rainbow stripes! Paint the top of the rainbow the same color as the largest arc. Let each stripe dry completely before moving onto the next one.

Step 6: For clouds, inflate mini balloons with a balloon hand pump, then knot and cut off the balloon tails. Attach the balloons to the bottom of the rainbow with a low temp hot glue gun. You’re all set!

So good! Hmmm, I might have to show this one to my girls – every year they change what they want to be for Halloween almost DAILY – but I bet this one would lock them in! 😉
