April Fool’s Day can be a lot of fun, but in the past I’ve had trouble finding pranks that aren’t crazy involved or slightly cruel. If you pack lunches for anyone in your household, this DIY mini lunch is the perfect harmless prank! If you make multiple packed lunches, line them up on the counter first thing on April Fool’s Day and wait to see your family’s reaction! Just don’t forget to make a real lunch for them to eat too!
Materials: plastic wrap, brown kraft paper*, knife, cutting board, scissors, pencil, ruler, glue stick, mini pinking shears (optional), mini snack cookies, carrots, slice of bread, sandwich meat, lettuce, cherry tomato.
*Note: if you don’t have time to make your own mini paper bags, similar ones can be purchased online here or here. Ideally, the bags should have gussets and have a front measurement of 2 1/2″ by 4 1/2″
Step 1: Prepare your miniature sandwich – use the knife to cut the slice of bread down into two pieces about 1 1/2″ by 2″ and cut the meat, lettuce, and tomato to fit. Assemble.
Step 2: Cut the carrot into sticks about 1 1/2″ long.
Step 3: Use plastic wrap to package the sandwich, carrot sticks, and snack cookie separately.
Step 4: On a piece of brown kraft paper, draw a rectangle 4 1/2″ by 8″ long. Along both the 8″ sides, make small ticks at the 1/2″, 3″, 4 1/4″, and 6 3/4″ marks. Draw an additional 1 1/4″ by 2 1/2″ rectangle connected to the base between two tick marks. Add 1/4″ flaps to the three sides. Cut out the shape and fold along the lines/tick marks. (If you have mini pinking shears, use them to cut across the top.)
Step 5: Apply glue to the 1/2″ flap and attach to form a tube.
Step 6: Apply glue to the three 1/4″ flaps and carefully close the bottom of the bag to attach. Once firmly attached, fold the bottom up to create the crease as seen on regular sized lunch bags.
Step 7: Fill the mini bag with the mini lunch.
Step 8: Write the name of the lunch-eater on the bag.
