Mod Party + Circle Photobooth DIY

Banana Republic approached us about doing a Mad Men party to launch their new Mad Men collection that comes out today.  We had some friends over to our studio for a little dinner and photobooth session and to try on the new collection. It was a really fun night. My friend Andrea did some awesome 60’s food and we made pompom party hats for our guests and my favorite part of all was the floating circle photobooth installation. The concept is really easy and just involves paper, glue and a sewing machine. The final effect is even more impressive in person because all the circles are constantly dancing around like a mobile. It is a super simple way to add lots of color to a party. Find the full instructions below after the jump.

Materials Needed: Sewing Machine, Cardstock, Fast Drying Glue (this stuff is the best), and a few clothespins.

Step 1: Cut your paper down to 1.75″ thick and 11″ long.
Step 2: Leave an extra long tail of thread at the beginning and sew down the middle of the piece of cardstock. Use tape to make a guide on where to place the paper. Space about an inch between each strip of paper. Leave an extra long piece of thread at the end also.
Step 3: Add some fast drying glue to the end of each sewn strip and glue it to another strip of paper (this allows you to get the bigger circles but still use standard sized sheets of paper.)
Step 4: Add more fast drying glue to the end of the paper and close the circle by gluing together. Use a clothespin to hold it in place while it dries.
Step 5:  The mobiles have the best effect when the string is attached both to the ceiling and the floor. An alternative is to attache a flat metal weight to the bottom ring.

jordan, did you lengthen the hem on your dress? it looks shorter on the BR website. i also would want it knee-length. just wondering if it is as short as it looks on the website. or if it’s longer on shorter legs?

you look adorable! – and the whole party looks awesome.

Nope! The dress was a standard size. I’m 5′ 4″ though…on the shorter side.
