Swimmy

On Sunday a group of friends will be meeting in Greece where we’ve chartered a sailboat to sail the Greek Isles. I’m so excited! I’ve been vigilantly hunting swimsuits all season and my procrastination and indecision have paid off (for once!) because I found them all on sale last week and scooped a few up. My second pregnancy left me with all sorts of awesome stretch marks so I’m loving the awesome high waisted styles around that were seemingly invented just for me.

A. Textured top and bottom from Princesse Tam Tam I’m so impressed with this French brand. Their quality and flattering fit had me wanting to buy every suit in the store. They only ship in Europe.

B. One shouldered tank from JCrew. Pretty much the most flattering suit to a post baby body you can find. I love the navy blue color.

C. Striped High Waisted Suit from Anthropologie I scored this suit at 50% off. I think I got the last one in my size! Some people hate the whole high waisted thing but I’m totally feeling it.

D. Highwaisted Black suit from Princesse Tam Tam. If you can get over the silly name (maybe it translates better in French?) they’ve got a million different swimsuit combinations to choose from. I should know I tried on all of them!

I hate talking about shopping for swimsuits because I feel like I start to sound like a Cathy cartoon. (Ack!) Where have you found cute suits this year? Do you like the high waisted suits or are they “man-repellant” as one reader so kindly described them.

I personally LOVE high-waisted swimsuits, and also one-pieces. I think they are so elegant and classy. Grab some big sunglasses and you’ll be the cutest one on the beach!

i’ve been wearing (solely) a high-waisted suit this year, and i’m totally in love with it. and it’s so not a man-repellant, it’s adorable! i vote D.

I really love high-waisted swimsuits. Weird tan-lines, but I love any chance to pretend I’m in the early 1960s…

    High waisted! Love it!

Although bear in mind that as well as the aesthetic preference, I am speaking as the owner of a 3-months-after-my-2nd-baby tummy, so I am somewhat biased…

They are so classic! I mean how can 2 or so extra inches of fabric make that much of a difference? If a man is repealed by them then I didn’t want him in the first place!

  8. Carrie

    July 13, 2011

Don’t cover up! Wear A for the best tan, D to look the skinniest, and C for feeling the most fun.

I am in full agreement with the peanut gallery! I actually adore classically styled one pieces, since my problem area is my thighs and no suit (one piece, two piece, what have you) can really mask the ridiculousness that my legs have become, I just put my suit on, smile wide and refuse to look down.

i’m a one piece kind of gal. but the high waisted are super cute. cathy cartoon. haha.

Love love love them all! The high-waisted suits are très chic and adorable 🙂

I laughed and laughed at “man-repellent”! That’s just absurd. All of these suits are super cute. There’s a blue/white/black striped one on the Princesse Tam Tam site that I just love.

  13. Kylene

    July 13, 2011

The black from Princess Tam Tam is timeless.

Man repellent? These are adorable.. B and D are classic beauties,

    July 13, 2011

The glorious, high-waisted D looks like it’s from a Dolce & Gabbana ad. So chic!

  16. Theresa

    July 13, 2011

I think they’re all positively adorable, especially the striped anthro one! And as for being “man repellant,” I whole-heartedly disagree; the last one is reminiscent of 60’s pin-up girl lingerie. What man can resist that?!

C is beyond darling! Have fun in Greece – sounds so fancy!

Oh, I forgot to mention how insanely jealous I am of your Greek Isle sailing excursion. Totally a dream of mine. Have the best time! And please share lots of photos when you return!!

    July 13, 2011

Yep. What everyone else said — especially Teresa (I’m totally okay with my curviness and a little extra poundage, but my thighs make me self-conscious) and Taylor. These suits repel the kind of man you WANT to repel!

I am loving C or D for sure! So retro! Also will you be blogging about your trip? I originally saw your post about the trip awhile back and would love to hear how your experience is. Coming from the US the trip will be significantly more expensive, but if worth it, the trip of a lifetime!

    July 13, 2011

I love C and D. D is very pretty but fancy underwear feel bathing suit. I like the Anthro one bc of the bright stripes! Its summer I say go for the bright colors and high waist! Love that style!

LOVE High waisted, and low cut….soooo sweet!

    Great picks!

If you can wear the two pieces, go for it! I, personally, can’t and I’d choose the one piece. But I’m 21 years past post-baby and still working on loosing the weight! LOL.
Have a wonderful trip – and post a picture for us to see you in your suit on the boat in the Greek Isles. I’m so jealous!

the only men repelled by high waisted suits are likely the type of man any decent girl wouldn’t want.

  25. Kacie

    July 13, 2011

I like them! I think they have an “old hollywood” charm about them. Get some big sunglasses and you’ll be in biz.

a sailboat in greece?! YES please. sounds fantastic. i love the ruched one-piece. xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams

I’ve worn the same jCrew one-piece for the past 4 or 5 years and I just decided to splurge on a new one. (I know—big splurge! Ha.) I love their quality and simplicity, and as a woman with a larger chest I really appreciate that they offer D-cups. I would choose B for myself. Maybe if I could muster the courage I would slip into D.

My very favourite comment you had last year (?) when you posted high waisted bathing suits was the person who said something along the lines of “oh I wish they came in one piece”. That one kind of confused me. Ha ha. I honestly will randomly think about that and laugh and laugh.

But anyhow, I love those suits. Very cool.

This post is so timely for me. We’ve just booked a vacation to Fiji and I’ve been wondering where I could find great swimsuits because it’s winter here in Australia. Thanks for the inspiration. x

I love the high waisted but I have big boobs so generally have to work around those, not sure high-waisted would work. I love princesse tam tam, I have some lovely underwear by them. (Oh and a bikini too, actually!)

I asked my (hot and hunky) fire fighter son (and also his adorable wife) the above question. His reply: “Oh dude, that’s SO pin up, SO hot. My favourite bathing suit for a chick. But frankly, it’s attitude. If a chick puts on a pin up suit and then acts all shy or frumpy she’ll come off as frumpy. But if she stands there and owns it, she’ll kill every guy on the beach.” From her: “I love it. Any suit will obviously look all the more better as her figure is shapely or greatly toned. However, that suit will hide a multitude of sins while playing up a man’s fantasy, the pin up girl, letting him guess what’s there as opposed to showing and removing all doubt. And yes, I agree with him, attitude in any suit is going to put you in the running.”

I’m obsessed with the vintage-style beachwear at Popina Swimwear. I’ve been massively lusting after a retro swimsuit (preferably in red), a giant floppy hat, and oversized sunglasses. Good beach reading and a colorful, oversized towel would be great too.

Please tell me you’ve seen Andy Samberg on SNL’s weekend update as Cathy. It was nuts.

High waisted bikinis, pants, skirts- everything! – are absolutely flattering and hot, according to me! However I find that not all body types are able to pull them off and that they work best with a little volume aroudn the hips. And about the man-repellant thing… well… I guess some men would find them unflattering but who really cares about that? I don’t go to the beach/public swimming pool/sail cruises (I wish!) to have men come over to me and say “I love your bikini”. So, yeah… go for it!!

B looks very similar to the bathing suit I bought for this summer, since I’m currently 3 months post baby.

Curiosity question – I thought Mormons didn’t wear bikinis? Or is it just some who are more conservative?

Hallelujah to the latest bathing suits stylishly hiding our muffin tops and spare tires, FINALLY! Your choices are fantastic. I recently picked up the Natalie One-Piece on sale from Anthropologie and it couldn’t be more flattering, the 300 reviews are synonymous (seriously, it’s life changing)! Enjoy the Greek Isles, oh how I long to be in Oia…

I love how the high-waisted suits look on lovely ladies with waists. I, however, am shaped like a block whose ‘waist’ is hiding somewhere underneath my rib cage. I have been hesitant to try a high-waisted suit because wearing anything high-waisted typically makes me look like a funhouse reflection with all the torso squished together perched atop two chopstick-shaped twigs that go on forever. I am self-delegated to the one-piece as I, too, have been stretched beyond capacity by my second pregnancy and am now proudly sporting a belly that my daughter (the older of the two) describes as an ‘old, popped balloon’.
