Treats Day 2 and Day 3
I hadn’t planned to blog about all these treats we sent my friend Mark as a thank you for programming my new site, but Alexis took such great photos and I would never turn down an opportunity to talk about baked goods.
Day One: We sent a Root Beer Sampler.
Day Two: Alexis made her famous chocolate chip cookie and wrapped them in brown wax sleeves and bakers twine. Do you have a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe? I’m obsessed with this recipe.
Day Three: We dropped off a box of Beard Papa cream puffs. Do you know these? It is a Japanese chain that has come to the US in the last 5 or so years. They use really fresh ingredients including raw vanilla bean for the pudding. You have to eat them fast because after a few hours they get a little soggy. My mouth is salivating just thinking about it. Have you tried Beard Papa’s?

Wow, it looks so delicious!!!
Loooooove me some Beard Papa!
Oh man. I’m going to have to stop for a cream puff on my way home tonight!
Yummy Beard Papa, that was a lunchtime treat. Not sure if there still is a store in London.
Love your blog : )
oh my. beard papa’s! and, I just found out that they have a location much closer to my house than I thought, so i might have to stop by on my way home this evening!
I LOOOOVE beard papas! They started closing in NYC for some reason, so I’m happy to have them back in my life in LA.
I want to do something nice for you so I can get yummy surprises too! Those Beard Papa’s look so good! I love all your ideas/blog of how to make normal life way more fun.
Those looks sooooo good!
Not sure if you are still looking for treat ideas but here is a variation on what to do with your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe: cookie dough truffles!

Also, the Cowgirl Creamery Sidekick makes some amazing gougères. The pastry is very similar to Beard Papa’s to me, but instead of filled with custard, they are filled with creamy herbed cheese.
America’s Test Kitchen cookies were my all-time fave too (browned butter makes everything better, right?), but try these: http://annies-eats.com/2008/09/08/thick-and-chewy-chocolate-chip-cookies/
I think they might be the winner for me.
P.S. Mark is lucky to have such a creative friend!
Oh goodness… I need to try Beard Papa stat. Those look amazing and I absolutely love the individually wrapped home baked cookie gift idea. I’m going to have to do that for someone soon. Lovely and delicious. As life should be.
I LOVE Beard Papa’s!! I first tried them in Hawaii and was so happy to find out a few years ago that they had them in SF! They are the best and yes, they must be eaten immediately.
i love beard papa! they rotate flavors weekly and my favorite is strawberry.
nothing makes my heart and tummy sing more than a beard papa vanilla cream puff. they’re heaven on a plate!
Beard Papa makes me want to do naughty, naughty things to my waistline.
Ooh! I haven’t had Beard Papa’s since I lived in Oakland! YUM! Now I’m really wanting a cream puff.
Yes! While we were living in Kuala Lumpur there was one right across our apartment-hotel. Never tried the puffs but the chocolate fondant mini cakes were DELICIOUS!
oh, i love the chocolate chip cookie recipe from cook’s illustrated (maybe a little different than the one you linked to?) i’m sure you read the nyt article about the perfect cookie, but i have started refrigerating the dough for a couple days before baking, and let me tell you, flavor elevation! highly suggested.
Those cookies look so delish!!!!!! But would love to have a cream puff!!!!!! THe brown wax sleeves would be so great to have, as I bake for people all the time, so I was wondering if you knew where I could order some from? I have looked online and have had no luck yet! Thank you for sharing the choc chip cookie recipe, will have to give this a try!!!!
Wow, these pics are so pretty!!!
I love the new site!!! I’m sure the programmer is very happy to help with all those delicious treats! Those cream puffs look amazing!

I ate Beard Papa’s all the time when I lived in Japan teaching English. Now I live in the middle of no where USA, 100′s of miles from the nearest shop. I visit the website every now and again and just drool.
I wish I could ask for baked goods instead of money for doing favours for friends haha Oh Beard Papa’s! I tried this for the first time when I was visiting my family last year in Vancouver. I wanted to go back every day and try their flavour of the day.
omg! beard papa!! miss you so much!!!!!
what a lucky programmer! beard papas are so delicious!

Remind me to do you a big favor sometime.
Yummy!, those cookies look delicious!!!
mmm.. that looks sublime
my favorite beard papa’s flavor is strawberry. sooooo yummy!
I live in Bangkok and drop by Beard Papa’s occassionally at the mall. Like that they are not soooo sweet.
LOVE Beard Papa! I live in NYC and get them there, but oddly enough I am in Tokyo right now, and have not found a Beard Papa store yet, but that is probably a good thing.
oh my, that all looks so delicious. sounds like i’m going to have to seek out beard papa next time i’m in a city where there is a location. i loooove choco chip cookies, but i’m not very good at baking them & i’m not really sure why since i’m decent at baking everything else.
I love Beard Papa! When I lived in LA, we used to get them all the time on Sawtelle. We’ve moved to Northern CA and now get them whenever we go to San Francisco. One time we drove to Yerba Buena just to get Beard Papa. My husband dropped me off, I bought a bag, and he drove back around to pick me up just so we could have some for the drive home!
I used to work at a Beard Papa’s! Oh, the hours I’d spend slaving over vanilla beans, it takes so much labor just to get enough vanilla for one batch of filling!
@Rebecca: there’s a BP in Shinjuku station, or you can visit the gorgeous flagship shop in Ginza.
This article is quite good! I like it very much!
Beard Papa is so clever… Those are lovely photos, great lighting. Now I’m hungry…

what a wonderful thank you! what fun it must be for your friend. you know how much we all love to receive packages or mail… especially such pretty ones filled with tasty treats. where can i sign up to do a favor for you?
for the previous comment about the wax paper sleeves: i use something similar, if not exactly the same and i get them at whole foods. they are a box of wax paper bags that we use in lieu of plastic sandwich bags. very inexpensive, too.
What a thoughtful gift! I love a little hand made yumminess!
Adding Beard Papa’s to my list of things to do next time I visit San Francisco!
[...] to end on a sweet note… if anyone wants to bring me cream puffs I’ll be your best friend forever. (and a huge congrats on Jordan’s new [...]
I always walk by Beard Papa’s downtown, but have never gone in–guess I’ll have to now! Those chocolate chip cookies look scrumptious, yum!
Life can never be that bad if cream puffs are close by =) I need to get me a big thing of twine like yours.

Yummmm Beard Papa – I’ve only ever had it on the West Coast. Sadly not in the South.
OH-MY-GOD! Those cream puffs look like absolute heaven… must try!
There is also a local SF place called Pacific Puffs worth checking out when you are back home.
I have a very dear memory of eating a freshly filled Beard Papa cream puff with my husband in Shinjuku station. We had gotten a box for omiyage and decided to see what all the fuss was about. We proceeded to finish the box on our train ride home. You brought me right back to that moment in time.
your pictures make my stomach rumbles!!
