Best of Oh Happy Day: Rooftop Dinner Party

This was for a friend’s birthday party last spring. We live in downtown San Francisco and we have a lovely rooftop so I decided to do a little party up there. When I do labor intensive parties that involve carrying stuff around I usually have the attendees help with all or part of the food. If I do everything then either the atmosphere or the food suffers. I have an industrial bubble machine so I had that running in the corner, it was fun being on the rooftops with bubbles floating around. (You can kind of see it in the last picture.)

Best of Oh Happy Day: Pier Dinner Party

This was one of my favorite parties ever from two years ago. I planned it on the Aquatic Pier which is a public pier in San Francisco. I go running around there a lot and I always thought it would be fun to do a dinner party there. It couldn’t be in a better location, we had stunning views of the GG Bridge, Alcatraz, and the City of San Francisco on each side of us. The weather was perfect which really was the biggest gamble of the whole thing. We rented the table, linens and chairs (and fit them in my valiant Honda Civic.) I had a small card table set up a ways off where I did food prep. There are more details on the original post here. I get emails sometimes asking if we got permission first. I didn’t even look into it. There are fisherman there with tables all the time so I just made sure we didn’t have any open flames or alcohol. ps: This party was for my friend Emily’s birthday party. Her husband teaches really amazing screenprinting classes in my studio and he has some spaces open. See his website for more details.

Dinner Party on the Roof

We had a dinner party for my friend, Jared’s birthday party on Saturday. We have really pretty roof so we did it up there. The roof is so grey and barren so it looked cool because we had a bubble machine going on the side. The weather was fantastic this weekend–we were lucky.

Dinner Party in the Middle of Nowhere

Oh boy. There is a lot to report from this weekend. First though, are the pictures from the dinner party we hosted Friday night. San Francisco has the best piers with the prettiest views. This summer I got the idea of having a fancy dinner party on one. {Most piers don’t allow alcohol, candles, or any sort of Sterno set up so keep that in mind if you try your own.} My friend Emily was turning 31 so we took it as the perfect opportunity to throw her this special party. It is really like playing Russian Roulette with the weather here but miracle of miracles–Friday night was warm and perfect. At the coldest part of the evening only a light sweater was needed.

The party was set up smack dab in the middle of the Aquatic Park pier. There was the Golden Gate Bridge on one side, Alcatraz behind us, and all the lights of the city and Ghiradelli Square on the other side. We rented the linens and chiavari ballroom chairs and then I bought battery operated LED votives so we could still dine by candlelight. Keeping the food warm was tricky but we had four courses, soup we kept hot in thermoses, salad, homemade macaroni and cheese served in individual ramekins (these were baked immediately before then covered and put in a cooler.) And for dessert we had pot de creme served with thick drinking chocolate served in cappuccino cups.
