Shamrock Money Cakes

by Kathleen Ballos

Have you ever had a money cake? My grandma used to make them for us when we were kids – she’d wrap coins in wax paper and hide them in the icing layer of our birthday cakes. When you ate your slice, you would always hope for lots of coins! This Saint Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be fun to use chocolate coins instead and hide them under shamrock toppers on these miniature cakes. So simple, but what a fun surprise!

Matchbox Birthday Card

by Kathleen Ballos

I love including a little treat in with birthday cards. Usually the treats have to be flat (like stickers or temporary tattoos) but not for this birthday card! Repurpose an empty matchbox into a unique birthday card with a fun surprise inside! Paired with a homemade cupcake, wouldn’t this be the sweetest gift ever?

Birthday in a Can

by Kathleen Ballos

I don’t know about you, but I love a good surprise. Repurpose a regular tin can into a mini surprise for your favorite birthday boy or girl. The best part is that you can fill them with whatever you like, ensuring the receiver gets a totally custom birthday treat.

Nautical Favor Boxes

by Kathleen Ballos

Even though summer is behind us, all things nautical don’t have to be! Craft these simple nautical boxes to hold favors for your next party or keep a few stashed away for those times when you need to dress up a small gift in a hurry. With the holidays coming up, I always like to have a few small gifts ready for those “I can’t believe I forgot!” moments and paired with a small gift these boxes are just right.

Postcard Surprise DIY

This is a project for a campaign I’m doing with Yahoo! Mail on keeping in touch with family and friends. This project is a great idea for everyday, you don’t need a special occasion. The idea is you get an email from someone and then you answer it in postcards. For example someone might ask you about your weekend and you take pictures of all the things you did in response.

Here we cut out the question from the email and glued it onto the back of the postcard. Then we glued (or taped) a little description on the photo on the front and voila! They are ready to be mailed! You can mail the cards one at a time or send them all the same day. How fun for a grandma to get several different postcards that earn a prime real estate spot on the fridge!

Do you ever do everyday surprises for your friends and family? I’d love to hear what you do to keep in touch.

A special thanks to Aubrey Trinnaman for the photographs and for Alexis Birkmeyer for pulling everything together. I love them girls.
