Color Wheel Pinata

Lots of people think exclusively about the color green for St. Patrick’s Day, but I think it’s the perfect time to celebrate all things rainbow! I mean, the pot of gold has to live at the end of somewhere right? This color wheel pinata is the perfect addition to your St. Patty’s soiree, or just for a colorful get together. Bonus points if you fill it with gold coins! Read on to see how we made it!

Materials: Large pieces of cardboard, corrugated paper, Rotape Tape compass, pencil, x-acto knife, scissors, colored tissue paper, packing tape, paintbrush, white gesso, hot glue gun, twine

Step 1: Use the rotape tape compass to draw a circle 30” wide on the cardboard. Cut out the circle with the x-acto knife and make another one the exact same size.

Step 2: Cut out a 4” wide strip of the corrugated paper, long enough to fit the outer edge of the circle. Attach the corrugated paper on the side of the circle with packing tape. Then, attach the other circle on the other side. Leave a small trap door for the treats.

Step 3: Before you close the pinata, make a small hole at the top of it and thread a piece of twine through the hole. Cut out a 4” square of cardboard and roll into a thin tube. Tie the inner end of the twine to the center of the tube then use this twine to hang the pinata!

Step 4: Paint a base white color. Once dry, sketch out the triangle sections on the pinata with a pencil. Mark the triangles where all the colors should go. We did a color wheel with 8 different colors.

Step 5: Cut out a bunch of fringe, 2” tall and 1cm wide in all the colors, using a ruler and a x-acto knife. Hot glue the fringe to the pinata, start from the edge and work your way in.

Step 6: Add fringe on the edges of the pinata, continue the whole way around. Fill the pinata with treats, and hang it up when done!
