DIY Hand Lettered Felt Flags

When I saw these really great felt colors I was inspired to do a new take on felt flags. We wanted the text to feel hand-lettered so we adapted some cursive fonts and added some flourishes and swashes. This project would be awesome for a wedding or birthday party. The black and white striped sticks would be easy to make but I actually bought them in the plant section at Ikea years ago and finally had a reason to use them! Click through for the whole project.

Materials Needed: Printable lettering template, scissors, x-acto knife, ruler, packing tape, stiff felt, mini precision scissors, Aleene’s Tacky Glue, hot glue gun, 3/8″ wooden dowels, hand saw

Step 1: Print out the lettering templates on 8.5” x 11” paper and roughly cut the shape around the designs. This doesn’t have to be exact!

Step 2: Take the felt you want to use as the background for your flag and cut out a flag shape using an x-acto knife and ruler. Measure the short end of the flag and cut a contrasting piece of felt in a matching length, 2” wide.

Step 3: On a new piece of felt, tape the printed design to the felt with packing tape. This will help keep the design in place and makes it way easier to cut out the more intricate letters.

Step 4: Cut the design from the felt with a pair of precision scissors. You can use an x-acto knife for the hard to reach interiors in the designs.

Step 5: Glue the lettering to the flag with a bit of Aleene’s, leaving a 1/2″ margin from the short end of the flag. Let dry completely before moving on.

Step 6: Hot glue the 2” strip of contrasting felt to the short end of the flag. Fold the strip in half longways and glue to the other side of the flag. You should now have a tunnel for your stick!

Step 7: Carefully saw the wooden dowels to 30” in length. Slide the dowel through the tunnel on the flag, and apply a bit of hot glue at the top to secure.

We looked at a bunch of cursive fonts online for inspiration and then came up with the designs ourselves!

Okay these are amazing. I have felt that’s looking for a use but I’ve seriously gotta invest in a glue gun. I mean, do you even craft if you don’t use a glue gun?
