Tiny New Car!

If you follow my instagram they you may have seen I bought a new car! I have wanted to buy a vintage FIAT 500 for several years (see here here, and here.) A few weeks ago I found one for an extremely good deal on Ebay and usually when I find one I like they are across the country, so when I saw it was nearby it was pretty tempting. There was a steep curve learning to drive it but I think we have it down now. We had to learn a few things like the radio doesn’t turn off when you turn off the car. You have to manually turn it off so I was draining the battery without knowing it! It wouldn’t start and I couldn’t figure out why. Ha! Also, when I drive it I have to “double clutch” it. It took a minute to adjust to but now I drive it like a champ. We had seatbelts installed in the back (it’s so funny to think they didn’t even have seatbelts) so now we’ve been going on little joyrides around the city with the family. It is super fun to drive and everyone waves to you and yells “I like your car!” It is really easy to find parking so it has been the perfect car to zip around the neighborhood in.

p.s.: I’m obsessed with this dress I got from Madewell. It’s the perfect dress. I like that it will transition to the cold weather nicely with a pair of tights (Holiday Parties!)

Adorable and what a great color! We live in a city and often use Car-2-Go. I love zipping around town in those tiny little smart cars, but none of them are as cute as yours!

SO darling! Everyone looks so happy. I’ve been dying for a vintage ride for some time now too. But I can’t drive a stick, so I’m not sure how that’s gonna work… 😉

Oh, she’s beautiful! We had one a few years back and we loved her so much. Custard yellow. Her name was Dinky Donut.

There’s a little film we made of her on my blog:

    Hi Jordan,

I’m quite sure I spotted, and pointed out your tiny car to a friend on Valencia St. last Friday, turning left onto 18th (on your way to BiRite, perhaps?) The smallest car I’ve ever seen is, I believe, what I called it. So cute!

    Love it!!!!!!!
I used to have an old red mini, with go-faster white stripes…I lived everything about it- the manual windows…and all the radio quirks like your fiat! Enjoy!!

This is so cool. I love that you bought this. It feels like you have some mantra of doing the impossibly wonderful, because you do it so often! You must never say your dreams out loud to pessimists…..is that your secret? lol. Keep up posted on how you handle the tough stuff of old-car maintenance and city living. My husband has dream cars but I get so pragmatic and boring when I think about owning them.

    Thanks for inspiring everyone.

Would you mind sharing a general idea of what you consider a good price for a vintage Fiat 500? I am so in love with this car and want to start searching for my own here on the East Coast, but I’m not sure what a good price is. Thanks!

I’ve looked at them on Ebay a lot and they tend to go for anywhere from $5,000-$15,000.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!! Oh, it’s so perfect! I have a yellow vintage mini cooper and I’m totally inlove with it. I’m sure it’s a wonderful experience driving around with it and I think it’s a perfect match for you.

I drove a 1983 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce in high school (made by Fiat), and became a pro at the radio turn-off, double clutching, and tapping the starter with a super long screwdriver when the car wouldn’t start. So crazy, and so fun! Enjoy!

My dad had one when I was growing up. We took that car everywhere. I have the greatest memories of my child in that car. Hard to believe now, but I used to sleep in the back sit. I fit perfectly!!!
    Enjoy your awesome car.

I just bought a 2012 Fiat 500. It hasn’t changed much from yours. I love it but where I live everyone drives pickup trucks. They ride right on my rear end but I don’t care. It is so cute and I haven’t been able to get out of the gas station for under 30.00 in a long, long time.

Congratulations. I learned to drive in a Fiat on the rice levees. I miss driving a stick. Bring your little cinquecento to Nob Hill to really test your clutch skills! The acid test is getting stopped mid block on Taylor in between Bush and California and then going forward without stalling or sliding into the car behind you. I used to be able to negotiate this monster with one hand on the gear shift and a latte in other while working the break and clutch.

I knew it! I saw you and your son and fiat on Linden Street in Hayes Valley. I was like, I know those faces…it’s that Happy Day family! Sooo Cute!

So curious, where did you move to? I keep looking for some reference somewhere, but all I could find was that you bought a place. East bay? SF?

Is it a manual? I’m having heart palpitations thinking of driving a stick shift in SF! Is it scary on the hills?

Gorgeous! We have wanted one since living in Italy. But I am dying for one in yellow ochre. I think we missed our chance since we now have three kids. Enjoy and maybe you can learn to wrench on it yourselves when needed.

That really is adorable! I can’t imagine buying a car on eBay, but I suppose it’s really no different than getting them directly from someone else any other way. I’m just used to buying from dealers, even though I know you pay more that way. At least I have the security of a warranty.

Still, that looks like just the right car for you! And the dress goes with it perfectly as well. 🙂
