Mylar Garland DIY

by Kathleen Ballos

I love making party decorations that are dynamic and exciting to look at. Not only does this mylar garland bounce light onto the walls but it also catches the breeze and spins like crazy. It’s a little bit hypnotizing! And are you craving something sugary all of a sudden? It might be because of this garland’s striking resemblance to ribbon candy!

Materials: Mylar wrapping paper, regular wrapping paper, scissors, glue stick, thread, needle.

Step 1: Cut the mylar wrapping paper into 1 1/2″ strips and the regular wrapping paper into 1″ strips. You’ll need a fair amount of paper strips for the garland, so don’t be afraid to cut lots.
Step 2: Thread your needle and sew large 2″ stitches through both layers of wrapping paper. While sewing, hold the papers together so that the plain paper is centered on the mylar.
Step 3: Gently gather the paper strips into round waves.
Step 4: Once you reach the end of one or both of the strips simply use a glue stick to attach another piece to the end.
Step 5: Continue stitching and gathering until the garland has reached the desired length.

I love that this idea can be done with crafty things just lying around the house. I wonder if it might be possible for me to ask if you could post a series where you make gorgeous party decorations like this out of seemingly ugly/cheap/leftover items you can grab at dollar store/party city. I am thinking this because the mylar could have come from any left-over mylar garland and it would be so great to see some inexpensive non-speciality craft items one could throw together out of the cupboard. This is a perfect idea for something like that!
