Root Beer Float Party + Soda Fountain Hats DIY

by Danyelle Mathews

I can’t think of an easier party to throw than a root beer float party (especially during the summer!) Throw some big glass mugs in the freezer, buy your favorite vanilla ice cream and root beer, then invite over your friends. To make the gathering a bit more festive, you can craft up some cute soda fountain hats for everyone to wear. Enjoy!

Materials: Butcher Paper or Freezer Paper, Tissue Paper, Elmer’s Glue & Paint (for decorating)

Step 1: Gather your materials.
Step 2: Cut the butcher paper to 26″ X 6 1/2″
Step 3: Cut one piece of tissue paper to 11 1/2″ X 9 1/2″
Step 4: Fold one edge of the butcher paper up 1″.
Step 5: Fold the opposite edge of the butcher paper up until it meets the 1″ folded edge.
Step 6: Fold the right side of the butcher paper 6 1/2″ toward the center. Crease.
Step 7: Fold the left side of the butcher paper 9″ toward the center. Crease.
Step 8: Turn the tissue paper in an accordion with 1″ folds. Crease.
Step 9: Re-open the side folds on the butcher paper you created.
Step 10: Place a small line of Elmer’s glue in the space between the two crease lines.
Step 11: Attach one edge of the tissue paper accordion to the glue line.
Step 12: Gently re-fold the tissue paper accordion (while it’s attached to the glue). Place a small line of glue along the exposed tissue paper. This is where the left side will fold over and become attached. Press securely.
Step 13: When the glue has dried tuck the shorter 6 1/2″ (right side) of the butcher paper into the opposite end of the hat.
Step 14: Paint desired embellishments on the hat.
Step 15: Have fun!

Oh my gosh! I haven’t had a root beer float for years and years. Looking at your photos made me want to run down to the store and make one! My kids are teenagers now, but your post brought back memories!

I’ve added your blog to my blog list. I was wondering if you’d consider adding mine to yours?

Thanks and have a good night!

I love root beer floats! I just may do this for my own birthday in couple weeks. Even though I’m turning 30, I still think the hats are cute and I will have to think about whether I want to make some of those as well, but the root beer floats themselves are a VERY strong possibility.

    Also, cute photos!

This seems so fun! I love looking at the photos shared. The kids are pretty much enjoying what they are doing with their root beer floats and butcher paper party hats. This reminds me of my younger years. Thanks for posting!

Awesome DIY project. The kids must have loved this idea Nothing brings me back to old memories of hanging out in my Grandfather’s barn then root beer floats and bailing hay. I miss my youth
