Our 500 Sq Ft Apartment: Bedroom and Bathroom

This is the last of our apartment posts! Our bedroom is a sunroom that we turned into a bedroom. Besides sleeping we don’t spend too much time in it. Sometimes the kids will watch a movie on it during the day with the ipad but other than that we just use it when we go to sleep. In the warmer months we leave the door open to let fresh air in. Our backyard has a ton of trees so the room has a great little vibe.

We put the bed up on risers to allow for more storage (like linens, suitcases, and winter coats.) The orange vintage rug we got on our trip to Morocco. The guy was trying to get us to buy fancy rugs and I kept asking him for crappy old ones with holes. Finally he brought out a dirty holey stash and we bought three of them for $200. We brought them home and cleaned them and they are some of my favorite pieces. The velvet stools we keep against the wall, they were Craigslist finds. The grey linen bedding is from France. I fell in love with all the linen bedding over there and bought a set for our bed.

Grey Linen Bedding, Green Blanket – AMPM in France, Antlers – Furbish, Wall Lamps – Ikea, Green Pleated Pillows – Furbish, Colorful Pillow – Furbish, Orange Rug – Vintage from Morocco, Stools – Craigslist, Pink Throw – Furbish

The bathroom is decent sized but doesn’t get great light. It is my least favorite room in the house to spend time in but it is clean and does the job.

So beautiful! This is my favorite of all the apartment posts.

I’m so bummed your apartment series is done. I’ve really enjoyed reading them all. I live in the peninsula. We are renting, but are thinking of buying. We go back and forth between staying in the heart of silicon valley where we’d pay more, or go down to San Jose for more space. Such a hard decision! Even though your place is about SF I totally try to apply your advice in my own situation as best as I can. Thanks!

Read yesterday’s posts. We keep them in the closet off the master bedroom. 🙂

I just love your style….so thoughtful and warm…even though the space is white, light and bright…the mixture of textiles just adds a layer of warmth. I love all your little details…they really matter, you know?

What does that little piece of paper say on the inside of the bathroom mirror?

Great series. Thanks for sharing. I also like that you spent time interacting with those who commented. I’m sure it’s difficult to find the time to do that but it makes a big difference.

I had to laugh at the thought of you leaving the sunroom door open to let in fresh air. Any little critters ever stop by for a visit? 🙂

Awesome series of posts! I love getting a little peek into your apt – which is stunning and just.so.adorbs at the same time! I know this will sound completely loony-tunes, but do you remember where you got the adorable yellow clock that’s shown sitting on your bedroom window sill? My husband and I have been looking for a cute yellow clock for some time now to no avail… thanks for any help!

Any chance we’ll get to see the backyard set up? I’m so intrigued and inspired with what you do with small spaces! We live in a 1000sqft bungalow and am always looking for great ideas to utilize the space. Thanks again!

It’s fitting that I read this now because I’ve been obsessed with downsizing lately, even though my husband and I just purchased our home last April. But this post with such a perfectly lovely small space along with this article I read in the New York Times makes me so how nice and possible it is to live with less, much less. Thanks for sharing!

perfect timing! We are moving from 3800 square foot home in Arizona to a 700 square foot cottage in Santa Barbara and this is such inspiration.

Looks like your bathroom has great storage–that’s one thing ours is lacking (and we share it with our two kids too!) Our BK apartment is 700 sq, and I’ve been loving this series. So much inspiration!

Love the bedroom. But the light would drive me crazy in the morning. I need curtains or I would be up with the dawn!

I love these house posts. I need to redecorate my house now. I like how the house looks clean and crisp with pops of color. Guess I have a weekend project now… after the antique fair in Round Rock.

I have a small space and I find I am constantly cleaning it. Do you have any tips on how you keep it from getting mucky quickly…especially because of the beautiful white and all the light?
We do little things, like keep shoes in the porch and have a few number of items that we really like…rather than a lot of just OK things.

Thanks for your apartment posts. They are a major inspiration to me in my tiny, but cute home!

I’ve really enjoyed this series. As a family of 5 with the possible move to SF for work looming over our heads for a few years now, I found your tips very helpful. You’ve also given me hope of finding something great. It can be pretty depressing looking at all of those craigslist ads with yucky carpet. I never thought of asking if I could tear it out.

    Love the blog!

I’ve loved this apartment series. Thank you for all the gorgeous details!

How did you get all those beautiful (and unwieldy) things home from Paris and Morocco? I’d love to know what options are out there for that kind of around-the-world move.

Most of it was in one of our 13 suitcases. We had a friend that was moving to the Bay Area bring a few boxes too. Rugs are the easiest because they fold up so flat.
