Italic Monogram Pinata DIY

It is no secret I have a tiny obsession with piñatas. But sometimes I think it is a shame to hit them to pieces because they are so pretty. Lately I’ve been using them a little differently, as presents. I make a smallish piñata (about 11″ tall) and then fill it with treats then give them to a friend for a birthday or special occasion. I love them because it doesn’t take much time 1-2 hours (an evening of movie watching) and they feel really special to give. One of my friends even keeps hers on her desk year round as decoration.

(Click through to find complete instructions…)

Material Needed: Free downloadable letter template, Crepe paper, scissors, quick dry tacky glue, pencil, tape, twine, empty cereal boxes

Step 1: Download and print out a letter and cut it out.
Step 2: Cut open the empty cereal boxes.
Step 3: Trace your letter onto the cereal box and cut out a front, repeat this step for the back of the letter as well.
Step 4: Cut out several three inch strips of the cereal box.
Step 5: Glue the strips along the edges of the letter (use the quick drying tacky glue), use tape to hold in place while the glue dries.
Step 6: Once the entire edge of the letter has been covered, glue the back in place and use tape to hold it in place while the glue dries.
Step 7: Cover the outside of the letter in crepe paper. Cut a 1 inch section of crepe paper and cut fringe on one side. Unroll the section and starting on one side of the piñata add a layer of glue and then crepe paper wrapping the paper around the letter. Repeat until the entire piñata is covered.
Step 8: Hang with twine.

I love it that you would make a pinata while watching a movie. My husband always gets frustrated with me for doing the same sort of thing. Always multi-tasking! Ha!

I haven’t been much into pinatas until I got the fever from bloggers and especially you. This one is particularly elegant and sweet. Your genus idea of giving as e present is tempting me to create my first pinata 🙂

Love the idea of pinatas as gifts rather than as break-aparts. This would definitely make my corporate desk infinitely more interesting to look at all day…

The great font for this piñata makes all the difference in the world, so classy. Now I just have to be okay with breaking with open.

Another fabulous project! Would be lovely as a decorative piece at a bridal shower — then a present for the bride-to-be!

Totally gorgeous! I always loved pinatas as a kid, and this is a chic, grown up version. Now I won’t look like a crazy person when I suggest a pinata at my next party…
