Here are some quick costumes that could be pulled together last minute with an errand or two and from stuff you already have. We put together three classic artist costumes: Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, and Vincent Van Gogh for less than $15 each. These are usually the kind of costumes I end up doing when I’m super busy. I like them simple and classic. Click through here for more photos and all the details.
Andy Warhol // For Andy Warhol we dressed him all in black and added that crazy white wig. You can add some black Wayfarer sunglasses if you wanted too.
Materials Needed: Andy Warhol Wig, Black Turtleneck, Black Pants, Tomato Soup Cans.
Frida Kahlo // We based this costume off one of the beautiful Frida Kahlo’s self portraits. The key to a good Frida costume is the flowers in the hair and the unibrow and moustache.
Materials Needed: Clip on Flowers, Eyeliner Pencil, Earrings, Scarf, and Dress.
Vincent Van Gogh // For Van Gogh we kept it really simple. We bought a red wig and beard and then trimmed it to look like Van Gogh then wrapped some gauze over his poor ear. You could also frame a small picture of Starry Night and carry it around.
Materials Needed: Red Wig and Beard, Gauze, Blue Jacket.

I LOVE these costumes, great ideas. Only problem I have is that I think it’s better to let my kids dress as what they want to, not what I would want them dressed as, so I doubt they’ll ever agree to such original ideas when they know more about Spiderman, Dracula or Willy Wonka 😉

I would give these kids every piece of candy, fruit, breath mint, sugary cereal and orange-flavored chewable Vitamin C in the house. I would even give them all the little girl next door’s candy.
Please, please, please with a cherry on top make a Little Georgia O’Keeffe!

Lovely costumes, very different from the usual ones. But just wanted to clarify that it was Van Gogh’s left ear that was cut off and not his right. The paintings show his right ear bandaged because he sees himself in a mirror.

RE Vincent Van Gogh… I read not long ago that the current theory regarding the ear is that it was cut off by fellow artist Paul Gauguin, who was a fencer, when they got into an argument. It was not clear whether it was an accident or a deliberate attempt to injure Van Gogh, but afterwards both men agreed to tell the police the self-harm story to protect Gauguin from getting in too trouble with the police. This seems as probable to me as the notion of self harm…although his suicide lends some credence. Great costumes..there must be some other artists (such as Dali) that could also provide inspiration. I’d put Warhol in a giant can of soup.

Those look great! One Halloween I dressed like Van Gogh, but as an adult. Some fake blood on gauze taped on one ear, with a rubber ear dangling below for extra effect. In case people didn’t figure it out, I used colored pens to draw a copy of his self-portrait on my t-shirt (but not while I was wearing it–that would have been good).
